Iron On
Oh The Romance
+1 Records/Reverberation
It's been awhile since I've reviewed a random pop record. It's been even longer since I've actually enjoyed a random pop record. It's got to be something astronomical: moons lining up, seas rising, orbits changing, and guitar-pop albums being good. That makes it something to savour, really.
Iron On is, I believe, a band from Queensland whose drummer, it appears, tragically passed away in July this year at the age of 29. In her honour they've gotten themselves a new drummer and released this album. It's a good thing too. Sounding a little like Screamfeeder in their glory days, with an even bigger focus on bi-gendered vocals, this is indie-pop as we used to know it without even so much as a trace of brat-punk and where the lyrics, silly though they may be, are just so much fun to sing along to.
Reckless Pronto, for example, makes very little sense, but
is truly damn cool. Then Playing Hard To Wait takes itself
seriously, but without losing the traction of the record. There's
A Shirt Of Yours At My House is a very neat break-up song with
a bit (albeit only a bit) of grunt to it, and the closing track, More
Than Tape, rounds things up nicely. It's not going to change the
world, but for a guy like me reminiscing about musical times past,
it's pretty special.
