Bizarre
Hannicap Circus
SonyBMG
Arguably the least threatening member of Eminem's D12 posse, Bizarre
is a rapper who frequently lives up to his name, not least in his
habit of frequently sporting a shower cap (and let's face it, anyone
who can make wearing one of those look cool deserves our respect).
'Hannicap Circus' is his debut solo album, and proves a rather motley
assortment of tracks: some good, some middling, and some unfortunately
pretty damn terrible. In the last category are such "gems" as Fuck
Your Life, which comes across as little more than a puerile attempt
to be as tasteless as possible (the fact that the backing vocalist
for it, Sindee Syringe, sounds like she's holding her tongue while
singing certainly doesn't help), the similarly tacky I'm In Luv
Withchu, the soporific Crush On You, and I Need A Friend,
a rock/rap song about a bad cop who does all sorts of vile things
but deep down, just wants to be loved (awwww!). The music's decent
enough, but that's about the only thing to recommend it.
At the opposite end of the spectrum there's I'm So Cool (nothing
earth-shattering, but still quite pleasant nonetheless), Hip Hop
(which features guest vocals from Slim Shady and, apparently,
The Chipmunks), Coming Home (a thoughtful song about the struggles
of being a father when your work often takes you away from your kids)
and the obligatory D12 collaborative effort, Nuthin' At All.
However, perhaps the best entry on the album is the moving One
Chance, a song about a struggling rapper; it's sort of like '8
Mile', but without the happy ending. Also deserving of an honourable
mention is the skit track Life Styles, which reveals the artist
to be something of a tightwad.
Overall, then, this is an album with some decent stuff in it, but a fair bit of dross as well. Given what an interesting individual Bizarre is, it's disappointing that his first solo effort should prove such a hit-and-miss affair.
