Adam Beyer
Fabric22
Fabric/Inertia
London's Fabric label has been churning out mix discs by a variety of producer/DJs for some time now. Adam Beyer's mix for the Fabric series begins with promise but falls a little flat about halfway through due to a fairly limited sound palette and an unrelenting, if not exhausting, pace. Admittedly I have always enjoyed dance music in a more domesticated environment rather than a bangin' club atmosphere; were I in such an atmosphere and off my nut on some form of chemical the mix of 'Fabric22' would be super but in this dosage, and on my nut, it renders me a little bored.
Beyer is obviously so honed in his mixing that it is often difficult
to acknowledge where one track ends and another begins, which is not
such a bad thing but I prefer a little more space and differentiation
between tracks to let them, and myself, breathe just a bit. There
are moments of respite however, and personal highlights include opening
track This World by Slam, gratuitously mucked with by the wonderful
Wighnomy Brothers & Robag Whrume; Osbourne's In Gear from the
excellent Ghostly International/Spectral Sound label; the inimitable
Reinhard Voigt's typical sledge hammering in Spice; and in
particular one of Beyer's own productions Snuff & Noise, which
contributes a rare slice of stumbling ethereal melody to the mix.
So while 'Fabric22' didn't knock my dance-music socks off, it certainly
provided enough good moments for it to be played a few more times,
although Beyer's closing selection She's The One (Circles In Time
Remix) by Hiem was a big old downer for me with its admittedly
hilarious but ultimately naff slap-bass line and 'haunting' synths.
Boo!
