According to the Macquarie dictionary, 'imago' is the final and fully mature stage of an insect's development during which most species develop their wings. Appropriately, it's also the album title of the Butterfly Effect's upcoming second release. "We're going to spend seven weeks recording it from October through to around Christmas," Drummer Ben Hall explains, "Originally, we actually intended to have the album out before the end of this year, but there were time restraints and Joe [Baressi, producer] hadn't finished working with Tool. He's also just done the latest Queens Of The Stone Age record and I believe he's very good at what he does, this is definitely the biggest thing we've done in our career so far."
According to Hall, the whole idea behind bringing out the band's new single Phoenix before the full album is recorded is to serve as a little taste test. "It's probably the heaviest track on the record. It serves as a kind of bridging gap between the new stuff that we've written and where we've been previously. With the new songs I see us finally all evolving into the band. When the Butterfly Effect first started we used to just hang out at home and write songs, and then we'd get together and go over it. With this record we've learned to write a lot better, this time it's all of us together."
Hall also claims that the band has finally "nailed our own sound" with less influences showing through the new record and the Butterfly Effect going more its own way.
"We're at this point of our career where we all listen to different music, whereas initially we all listened to the same thing, like the Deftones or something, and then we'd go back to rehearsal the day after and the result would end up sounding similar to the Deftones. But now everyone brings something unique to the band rather than the same genre. Like, I love Dave Matthews, and I'm actually getting into r'n'b quite a bit too."
The Butterfly Effect has always been goal-orientated, Hall admits, gradually climbing their way up the musical ladder: going from playing to a hundred punters to 500 and, in more recent days, over a thousand. Of the band's current success, Hall says, "I would say our popularity is more because of word-of-mouth. I think people must say to other people 'they're a band, and they kind of play their instruments, and it's fun, so you should come and watch' sort of thing," he laughs. "It's strange sometimes. I look at a band like Thirsty Merc who have sold double the records that we have, yet for a while they haven't been pulling heads to their shows. In the meantime, we didn't sell half the amount of records they did, yet we got twice as many people to our shows. That leads me to suspect that, for the people, it's all about the live show. I mean, there really is nothing better than seeing a live band either. With a record you get the same emotion every time, but live you can always give it a little more because there's so much more energy and emotion that goes into a show. It's fucking great, I really get into it!"
Despite the fact the band has toured over fourteen countries so far and won over countless fans all around Europe, the Butterfly Effect seem very much to be home-bodies, admitting that they prefer the good old Big Day Out tour over anything else they've done to date.
"This year I noticed System Of A Down were watching from the side of the stage, which is always a great compliment!" Hall laughs. "But the best thing about doing the Big Day Out is the fact that you're with the same people on the same tour for three weeks so you really get to bond with other musos and people that you have a lot of respect for. It's definitely the funnest experience."
But right now the guys are concentrating on the upcoming 'taste-testing' tour, which visits Adelaide in mid-October and, of course, are looking forward to recording their new album straight afterwards. "I'm a bit nervous but I'm looking forward to getting in there. It's fucking fantastic."
