Figgkidd
This Is Figgkidd
Sony/BMG
Barely a year ago Australian hip-hop artist Figgkidd (who could, with some justification, be considered as this country's answer to Eminem) put out an album entitled 'What Is Figgkidd?' The title of this follow-up recording would suggest that the material on it is meant to provide the answer to that question, but rather deviously, 'This Is Figgkidd' turns out to be little more than a reworking of its predecessor; all that's different is the order of the tracks, a few extra songs, and a bonus five-track DVD.
The extra tracks here are Nuthin Eva Worries Me, Most Hated,
99 Bottles and a remix of My Oh My, the opening song
on both albums. The first of these new pieces features D12's Proof,
and certainly has more than a touch of D12 insanity about it. Set
against a bouncy (if often disjointed) beat, it contains a highly
infectious chorus as well as some nice references to Mr Squiggle and
Christopher Skase. Most Hated, which also features MC Losty,
is a much more serious and edgy-sounding piece, while 99 Bottles
(whose guest performers comprise Bishop and Asian rapper Kimikaze)
is, as its title suggests, a rousing ode to alcohol.
And then, of course, there are all the tracks from 'What Is Figgkidd?'
For those unfamiliar with them, these are all very good pieces of
hip-hop, and include such songs as the twisted Fairytale Master,
the rock/rap crossover 19, the truly bizarre Breathe/Clap,
and the obligatory "everybody in the house" piece, Oww!!
This is an excellent album overall, although those who already have 'What Is...' may find that there's not enough new material here to justify getting 'This Is...'. In any case, it's certainly heartening to see an Australian rapper making a name for himself.
