Dad Rocks!
EMI
To my beautiful daughter,
Sometimes it falls to a dad to teach a life lesson to hold you in good stead for the future. This one is less important than most, but I feel it should be taught all the same.
Every Father's Day the shelves are packed with 'ideal gifts for Dad!' Now, I appreciate (or maybe just hope) that you'll want to give me something. I couldn't ask for any more than you already do, and I'd be perfectly happy to simply share a Milo and dance to The Wiggles, but I know it's difficult to avoid. And every year albums appear for 'Dads' and 'Blokes', with themes like barbecues, driving and utes. You know I love music - and your early acceptance of Mr Bungle was particularly heartening - but I ask that you recognise your dad is different to those that these CDs cater for.
I don't want to hear My Sharona, Centerfold, The
Joker, Rebel Yell or Smoke On The Water. Those aren't
the soundtrack to my being a dad. The real soundtrack to my fatherhood
is your giggling, singing and attempting to copy words I say. In the
background are any number of bands I love; from Muse to the 'Femmes,
from Jurassic 5 to Massive Attack. Sure, every now and then a song
or two on these records appeals to me (What's My Scene, for
example, is a corker). But my tastes are outside what most labels
would ever consider using. They're hardly lofty; but they are disparate.
I really hope we introduce each other to a stack of great bands as you grow older. I just ask that you never feel the need to buy me a record like this one. Not even as a last-minute thing. After all, being my daughter I'm sure you inherited that gene. So save your money, grab the milk, and let's point our fingers and do the twist.
Love, your Daddy.
