Dance News.
Well, what a massive couple of weeks it has been. Blind was absolutely huge success, with many people impressed by the live acts as well as the DJs. Drummatic Twins also loved their gig, being smaller and more intimate than their other gigs, and I was lucky enough to catch them again in Sydney along with Roots Manuva and Freestylers and a host of others at Field Day, which was absolutely mental! Unfortunately that meant I missed all the good parties that happened in Adelaide over the long weekend, but 'dems da breaks!'
From his base at Blackmarket Records and through his label Dread Ray, Ray Keith has released some of the biggest tunes in d'n'b, including Chopper, Terrorist, Renegade Soldier and Singtime. So get ready to yell "rewind!" as Ray hits town on Fri 14 Oct at Earth, supported by MPK, Noddy, Fiction and John Doe plus MCs G-Swift and Xpress.
Nominations for the inaugural Australian Music Prize ("the Amp")
opened on Mon 3 Oct. Hoping to be Australia's answer to the
UK's prestigious Mercury Music Prize, the AMP awards the winner
with a $25,000 prize and more importantly, media exposure. It's
open to all forms of music, so if you're a producer or artist
of dance music - go for it! To find out more, visit www.theamp2005.com.au.
Now, I'm not sure if I should be reporting this or if it should
be part of the metal section, but after ripping up the This
Is Not Art festival, threeJapanese noise artists will be hitting
The Skeleton Office Party at Rhino Room on Sat 9 Oct. Gulpepsh
is quite simply a master of beatboxing, Doddodo delivers her
own brand of "kawai casio-spastic melodies interlined with hoe-down
blip-gabber beats", Ove-Naxx comes at you with deliriously bent
electronica, and Toecutter is one of the head honchos down in
Sydney's infamous free party crew Systemcorrupt. Joining them
will be locals I'm Gonna Fucking Kill You and Minikomi. My very
first rave in 1993 was called Release, and Release on Fri 14
Oct at Black Cat will relive the glory days of hard dance with
Mr S, Noddy and Submission, taking us all back to an era of
fun and funk when the likes of Tony de Vit, RR Fierce and Baby
Doc were setting the world alight. Grady G, Matt Rains and Snoozy
are leading the future with their stomping beats, whilst Finnish
freeform will er... finish the night as Bongo takes the stage.
And here's a news flash: Steve Jobs of Apple says Music Companies are Greedy! Speaking at some apple stand in France, Jobs confirmed at least two record companies are trying to raise the price of singles on iTunes. Still, no use us getting in a fit over it, Australians STILL have no iTunes store of our own. Pity really, because it means we miss out on the digital-only version of trance legend Tiesto's 'Just Be - Remixed', which is an iTunes exclusive release. How much longer do we have to wait?
