Puff 'n' Stuff.

Puff's a stickler for tradition, which is one reason why this award-eligible column is being written buck naked on a rooftop whilst being serenaded by a mariachi band - and it's also why we're kicking off with a round up of CD launches. First rock cab off the 'n'roll rank is Pharaohs, who'll be launching this issue's 'We Liked It And You Will Too' recipient 'Forest For The Trees' at Electric Circus (the former Minke Bar) on Fri 23 Sept. but if you can't make that show they'll also be launching their new 7" single (they're prolific, these boys) at Fowler's Live on Fri 14 Oct with No Through Road, La Femme La Fever, Hit The Jackpot and My Sister The Cop.

It's easy to overestimate Puff's powers, since they're so considerable - charm, wit, internationally recognised good looks, the ability to destroy cities with a single thought - so it's understandable that Candida would just assume Puff would know about their CD launch at the Jade Monkey on Sun 25 Sept with Day On Fire and LC3s. Unfortunately, Puff doesn't know anything about it, so you'll just have to hope they tell you themselves. On the other hand, Puff reckons that there are a few cities just begging for a good destroying...

Nervous Gerbal have also finished work on their disc, which would go some way to explaining the fact that they're holding a CD launch at Jive on Sat 8 Oct, along with Munchkin, the Central Deli Band and the Kim Roberts Band. They even promise showbags for all comers, which is positively gentlemanly of them.

The Bovines report that they are just about ready to release their debut CD-EP, but aren't about to let Puff know sensitive details like "dates" or "venues" or "what they're going to call it". Hence Puff naturally assumes its title will be 'Kicking It Dopecore Bovine-Style III: The Raddening', but you can check with them by getting along to their show at the Exeter Hotel on Sat 24 Sept with Alex Cameron and bellowing it at them over and over,

The mighty Wolf & Cub have a brand new single ready to drop: it's called Steal Their Gold, it's a taster for their debut album (due in early 2006) and it contains remixes by hot UK producers Paul Epworth and Minotaur Shock (who've remixed the likes of Bloc Party, Futureheads and Super Furry Animals). What's more, they're launching it at Jive on Fri 7 Oct with New Zealand's Die Die Die and locals Artax Mission.

And don't think the launches end there, kitten: Fighterpilot have their CD 'The World Can't Touch Me' in the can and will be all set to launch it at the Enigma Bar on Fri 21 Oct, with Booster, Velveteen Habit and Lastminute-ville looking on with quiet pride.

The Story Of have also finished work on their forthcoming magnum opus and will be launching it at the Crown & Anchor on Fri 21 Oct.

Of course, while others are looking to the future, STR are ready to call it a day. Er, again. Yes, they're definitely, no-fooling splitting up with a final ever show at Fowler's Live on Fri 7 Oct, with Embodiment 12:14, Mere Theory and In Fiction - and they assure Puff there'll be no sneaky reformations a year down the track like last time. Go ahead, STR, break our heart again...

Stuff from Puff: The beginning of the year was all about reformations, now it looks like the second half is all about splitting up: latest completely unsubstantiated breakup rumour from the always-reliable Internet is that Feeder will be calling it a day after their next album: drownedinsound.com reported frontman Grant Nicholas let the news slip in an unguarded moment at the UK's PS2 Weekender... Rocket From The Crypt have also announced that, "After 16 years of scars and ear damage, all in the name of spreading goodwill and the rock and roll doctrine" they're splitting after one final hometown show on Halloween... Similarly alt.country sorts Trembling Blue Stars have announced that their upcoming US tour will be their last, though they're planning to release on more album next year before officially retiring... And Weezer have confirmed that they have no particular plans to still exist a year hence, although that's about par for the course... A couple of chaps at the bar overheard by Puff during the Fozzy gig last week at Fowlers, when faced by WWF wrestling frontman Chris Jericho's singing performance: "Jeez, I wish he'd wrestle somethin'."... Britney Spears dropped her sprog on Wed 14 Sept: it's a boy, possibly named Preston - which is 80-85% less stupid a name than Puff had assumed it would get... And the babies just keep on coming: the same day that Britney's DNA line was continued came word that New Found Glory's bassist Ian Gruska and wife Stormy welcomed their son Oliver into the world, while Josh Homme and Brody Dalle (Queens Of The Stone Age and The Distillers, respectively) are expecting their first child in January... For once, a story about former members of The Libertines that doesn't involve Pete Doherty hitting someone or injecting something: Carl Barat has announced the lineup for his as-yet-unnamed new band. Former Libs sticksman Gary Powell on board alongside guitarist Anthony Rossomando, who replaced Doherty after his acrimonious departure. Bass duties have been taken on by Didz Hammond, who's quit The Cooper Temple Clause to do so... Vale Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown: the 81 year old singer/guitarist lost his battle with lung cancer after returning to his former hometown of Orange, Texas, after fleeing Hurricane Katrina. He'd spent the last 50 years mixing up blues, country, jazz and Cajun music, for which he took out a Grammy in 1982. Rest well, Mr Brown.

The rock'n'roll juggernaut known to audiences the nation over as The Mess Hall will tear Fowler's Live a new rock hole on Fri 30 Sept, when they make with the noise alongside The Vandas and Everest.

The Falls has sold out and the first Big Day Out announcement is still a few weeks away, but lovers of festivals should take note that the first announcement for the Meredith Festival is a bit of a humdinger: Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, You Am I, Billy Childish & The Buff Medways, The Avalanches DJ Show, Wolfmother, Cut Copy, Okkervil River, The Nextmen, Airbourne, Johnny Idem, Clare Bowditch & The Feeding Set, Architecture In Helsinki, The Mess Hall and The Grates. How rad is that? It's all happening on a farm in Meredith, Victoria, on the weekend of Fri 9 Dec to Sun 11 Dec, with tickets on sale right this freakin' second.

Speaking of selling out and festivals and the like, word is that the Day On The Green show with Pete Murray and The Whitlams on Sat 3 Dec is getting very, very close to a sell out - so if you're thinking that Peter Lehmann Winery might be a nice place to spend a day, you'd better do something about it pretty damn quick smart. Especially since Pete's got a new album out any second, entitled 'See The Sun'. Right, Pete?

Oh, and while we're on the topic: planning on going to see Missy Higgins on Adelaide Uni's Barr Smith Lawns on Sat 15 Oct (with Ben Lee and The McMenamins)? Well, either you're looking at your tickets and thinking "whew, glad I grabbed them when I did" or you ain't going, bucko: the show's sold out. Completely. Sorry.

Also Puff's told that the Coke Live & Local Show at the EntCent on Sat 8 Oct (with Spiderbait, The Living End, Dallas Crane, The Spazzys, The Hot Lies and so forth) has also sold out - in fact, as with Missy, Adelaide sold out first. Yes, you read that right: Adelaide's selling out before Melbourne and Sydney.

So, while all these gigs sell out around us, it makes perfect sense that more tours should avoid Adelaide: Jose Gonzalez is heading everywhere but here in November, and Green Day are coming back for two shows only (Melbourne and Sydney) with My Chemical Romance and Jimmy Eat World. Yeah, cheers. No, really: cheers.

Noticed that Heaven's been pretty quiet of late? It might stay that way for a while, at least according to The Advertiser: on Thus 15 Sept they reported that the licensing dispute that closed the venue a few weeks back has yet to be resolved. In any case, it seems as though while the club nights are on hold, the touring acts - like Unwritten Law's show on Thurs 29 Sept with Pepper and In Fiction - will most likely still go ahead (and if something does mess up, promoters Scorpion Entertainment assure Puff they have a fallback - you can trust them).

The good people at the Wilderness Society are holding a fundraising gig to raise money for their campaign to have more of South Australia's waters declared as Marine National Parks (pointing out, as they do, that over 85% of SA's marine plant and animal species are found nowhere else on earth). To that end, they've gotten Leigh StarDust, The Casio Brothers, the Mandala Project, the Rickety Old House Band and The Central Deli Band to donate their musical services to a special gig at the Grace Emily on Sun 25 Sept. It kicks off on 6pm, so be early!

Those socially-aware Melbourne folk punkers The Go Set are popping back to Adelaide to spread the good word at the Crown & Anchor on Sat 1 Oct, along with Meebar - and since that's a Saturday night, you can chant and pogo with the 'Set, then sass yourself stupid to DJ Ian's fine work at Crank!.

Garage are holding their next '3 @ Garage' gig in which they get a trio of local music types to have a bit of a sing and then a bit of a talk about how they wrote the aforementioned songs. The first one was a roaring success and they reckon the trend will continue with The Rest, The Audreys and Foreshore on Wed 28 Sept.

The folks at Reynella Enterprise & Youth Centre are continuing their open mic nights, so if you're down south and fancy having a hit, strum or sing then grab your respective instrument and head to the Crossroads on Fri 30 Sept. It's all-ages to boot.

They were our cover stars a couple of issues back, and now Magic Dirt are roaring into the Governor Hindmarsh on Fri 30 Sept for a show insupport of their brand new 'Snow White' album, with touring buddies Airbourne and locals Pharaohs filling out the bill nicely.

Those improvisational men of jazz known as The Necks are roaring back to Adelaide for one of their increasingly infrequent shows - all the more reason to be at the Gov on Sun 25 Sept then, wouldn't you say?

Got your groove on, Adelaide? Puff trusts you have, since those sassy New Zealanders we know and love as Salmonella Dub will be making with the bears at the Gov on Fri 23 Sept.

The artsy folks at acquiescence: Not Dreaming, Creating want to hear from all "visual artists, performance troupes, comedians, original musicians, electronica acts and other awesomely talented artistic beings" who might want to be part of their enormous showcase at next year's Fringe. They're holding paid auditions over the next few months (yes, you'll be paid - how d'ya like them apples?) so drop them a line at notdreamingcreating@yahoo.com.au.

Motor Ace return with copies of their newish 'Animal' CD under their arms and a sincere desire to rock you at the Gov on Sat 1 Oct.

Melbourne melodic hardcore types Everhappens are heading our way with their debut CD 'Arguments Without Action' for two shows with Mad Batch: catch them at the Crown & Anchor on Fri 30 Sept (with Before It All Ends) and the Avalon Art Gallery on Sat 1 Oct (with The Brews).

In the US they rely on some stinking groundhog, but here in Australia we have a more elegant method of heralding the coming of spring: we know that the winter hasn't truly ended until there's an announcement of a tour by the John Butler Trio - and hence Puff's delighted to smell the change in the air that came with the news that they'll be at Thebarton Theatre for two nights in December (Tues 6 Dec and Wed 7 Dec, to be exact).

Parkway Drive aren't quite locals - but since they're here so damn often they should at least get honorary Adelaide membership. In any case, they'll be returning in triumph to Fowler's Live on Wed 19 Oct with their much-anticipated 'Killing With A Smile' album.

Roots/blues chap Jeff Lang's rather chuffed with having been nominated for an ARIA with his new album You Have To Dig Deep To Bury Daddy', and you'll hear that joy in every note when plays at the Gov on Sat 8 Oct.

Lordy loo! How much stuff's going on in Radelaide at the moment? Freakloads, that's how much, and you'd be letting yourself, your city and the culture as a whole down if you weren't to...
