Bit By Bats
+ Pharaohs, La Femme La Fever
Jive, Sat 27 Aug

What a line up, eh? I'd been waiting for this show with itchy dancing feet and I was far from disappointed. First up was La Femme La Fever, a band which I was not entirely impressed with the first time I saw them but they have confidently played their way to 'thoroughly impressive' status since. Their mid-song pauses kept dancers on their toes and the front floor filled quickly with curious punters.

But on to the main reason I was excited: I just can't get over Pharaohs. Here is an Adelaide band, only one year old, that could easily do a world tour tomorrow. Their set list is impeccable; even the ballads inspire spurts of erratic dancing which barely gives you time to catch your breath between the indie-disco-rock songs; each one as beguiling as the next. Current single Keelhaul is but a taste of what this band has to offer: lead singer/guitarist Dan Crannitch is a natural on stage, commanding attention with his intense dancing, rolling eyes and, er, bleeding fingers. Drummer Joel Crannitch plays with a proficiency well beyond his teen years and Joel Amos' basslines tie each song together.

Having experienced the Pharaohs magic, Bit By Bats had a hard task in front of them. In somewhat of a home town final, they managed to stand their own ground and the crowd were anything but stagnant. In fact, I think this is the first concert in years that I have actually seen moshing. Without meaning to stereotype, the crowd that collected at front of stage, with dread locks and a penchant for crowd surfing, were not what I had expected at a Bit By Bats show; nor were the puffer jacketed lads in the back corner. Crowd image aside, everyone seemed to enjoy the 'Bats set as they rattled through old favourites and newer material. They even busted out the Theremin for good measure.

At the end of these three 'Adelaide' bands I felt a sense of pride for ol' A-town. What we are producing here is no less than a match for interstate or overseas bands and we should be supporting our musical sons and daughters while we still have them. Did I mention that Pharaohs are awesome?
