The Coral
The Invisible Invasion
Deltasonic/SonyBMG
For 'The Invisible Invasion', The Coral's third official LP, the seven-piece
plumped for the production skills of Portishead's Geoff Barrow and
Adrian Utley, a decision which may have contributed to some of the
slightly darker themes of this album. Genuinely haunting tunes in
Far From The Crowd and Late Afternoon help leave the
tongue-in-cheek pirate themes of The Coral's previous work behind;
however, the darkness is only skin deep. Even the potentially downbeat
premise of Leaving Today is turned around into a classically
happy jaunt, So Long Ago is similarly upbeat, and first single
In The Morning has probably been hard to shake from the head of
many a Triple J listener.
Barrow and Utley's influence is obvious on this record. While the
most prominent work is on the inventive instrumentation of A Warning
To The Curious, their ingenious use of sound occurs throughout
the album. The brilliant guitar sounds and other effects featured
in Arabian Sand come to mind. Perhaps it's the brilliantly
complementary production, or the way that The Coral have subtly refined
their sound in the last couple of years. It's probably both. Whatever
the reason, 'The Invisible Invasion' features some of The Coral's
best work yet.
