Stewart And Melville
You Are Real
Vicious/Shock
Ambient synths + simple beats + acoustic guitar and piano + filtered
vocals = Stewart and Melville's 'You Are Real.' This is the same formula
that has given ambient electronica artists such as Air and Sigur Ros
significant success, but where Stewart and Melville differ is that
they appear to diverge less from the formula than the latter artists.
This is perhaps one of the reasons why their debut album lacks a certain
level of depth. The opening U R Real sets the scene with tingling
symphonic sounds but the album unfortunately does not stray too far
from this. Even with the more up-tempo beats of Amoeba, You've
Changed and Eliza's Dream it fails to deviate much from
their musical formula and therefore listeners may grow tired after
a few listens.
Nevertheless, the enormous talent of these two Kiwi Sydneysiders is undeniable. Their ability to evoke such beautifully ethereal sounds is admirable, and theirs is an impressively individual interpretation of ambient electronica. With their affiliation with Vicious Records, home of successful Australian electronic music producers Andy Van and John Course, they are in very good company.
