Sloan
A-Sides Win: Singles 1992-2005
Reverberation
Canadian power-pop quartet Sloan have somehow managed to slip under the radar here in Australia during their fourteen years of life, which is rather odd. It would not go too far to say that many of the bands that came out of this country's large and impressive power-pop scene - Even, The Anyones, The Fauves, even maybe You Am I - owe a great debt to the sounds, feelings and harmonies of Sloan.
To my mind, their Australian progeny write better lyrics (the first
lines of debut single Underwhelmed are "She was underwhelmed
if that's a word / I know it's not 'cause I looked it up / It's one
of those skills that I learned in my school"). Even still, Sloan has
released some absolute corkers of songs - People Of The Sky is
a brilliant singalong, Everything You've Done Wrong is a masterful
'sixties ballad, and Money City Maniacs, right from its siren-sounding
introduction, is one of my favourite songs ever, with one of history's
absolute greatest chorus harmonies.
Musically, this is a must-have best-of, but it falls short of its contemporaries by having no bibliographical or biographical information. The accompanying DVD is much appreciated for giving us every one of the band's filmclips (and there are some great moments here), but the documentaries it provides relate only to the clips, and not to the band in a general sense. That said, if you've never heard of Sloan, now you have no excuse.
