Puff 'n' Stuff.
Those amusingly satirical Melbourne sorts known as Man Bites God have their debut full-length album 'The Popular Alternative' out now, and they'd like you to a) buy it, and b) go and see them being amusing and (time permitting) satirical at the Rhino Room on Fri 16 Sept. Here they are, waiting for their Adelaide ride:
He may have left us in 2002, but dB Magazine still fondly remembers
our friend Chris Uhlmann - Circle Clan founder, sometime dB
Magazine delivery driver and all-round splendid chap, who spent
his last weeks in the care of the excellent people at the Mary
Potter Hospice in North Adelaide. His former bandmates are reforming
once again to hold the second Humann benefit in his name. It's
happening at the Adelaide UniBar on Sat 17 Sept from 5pm, with
NFI, Munchkin, The Hate, Blow Up Betty, Los Diablos, Barcode,
Deadlock and Stilkarma alongside the reformed 'Clan, with all
proceeds going toward the excellent work of the Mary Potter
Hospice. What's more, Circle Clan will have a new five-track
EP available exclusively at the show.
Oh, it breaks Puff's heart to say adieu to another of our city's combos, but Baby Doll are calling it a day after an album, two EPs and a solid four or so years sweating and sassing around the city's sinks and stews. However, they're going out with a bang: a bang which is manifesting itself as a gig at the Crown & Anchor on Fri 9 Sept with Pharaohs. Goodnight, sweet 'Dolls, and may flights of angels rock thee to thy rest...
And while we're on the subject of ch-ch-ch-ch-changes, Comrad64
are bidding farewell to drummer Lachi Pryor (who's abandoning
them to take up sticksman duties in Move To Strike, incidentally).
But just to show there's no hard feelings they're seeing him
off in style with a show at the Rhino Room on Sat 24 Sept, with
The Kim Roberts Band and Pariah. It's also likely to be the
'Rad's last show for the year, though they promise they'll be
back bigger, better and entirely drummed-up in 2006.
Lovers of New Order and Joy Division, take note: a bunch of
quirky locals (including Ringo Stalin, Apes Of God(Damn), Sweet
Raxxx, Stroszek, Brutal Snake and Awesome Welles) are joining
forces to pay tribute to Manchester's finest with the Ceremony
tribute night at the Lizard Lounge on Fri 16 Sept.
Puff had thought things were quietening down with local CD launches.
But Puff was wrong - dead wrong. For one thing, Tony Font Show
(or, as Puff once knew them, Lucky Mobility) have sprung a launch
on us all: and said launch will be Jive on Fri 9 Sept, with
Rudderford and Colorblind in support. What's more, they're going
to just hand over free copies of the CD to the first 20 people
through the door. Which is nice of them.
And it doesn't stop there: Candida are also set to launch their new CD at the Jade Monkey on Sun 25 Sept, Wolf & Cub's new single will be set free at Jive on Fri 7 Oct, Nervous Gerbal launch theirs at Jive on Sat 8 Oct, Bluestone launch their CD at the Fad Bar & Gallery on Sat 22 Oct, and 'Rhythm 'n' Blues', the debut album for Sweet Baby James & Rob Eyers, is in stores even as you read this. What's more, expect word on new discs for Little Ice Age, Later That Night, The Stanford Prison Experiment, Pharaohs and Special Patrol before too long. That's some nice work there, Adelaide: that's what Puff likes to see.
Bad news, Thirsty Merc fans: the band have had to pull their
Adelaide date on Sun 23 Oct, since they've got to make an appearance
at the ARIAs. Good news, Thirsty Merc fans: they've rescheduled
the show for a fortnight later, at Heaven on Sun 6 Nov.
Lior is coming over for the 2005 Adelaide Peace Festival on
Sun 18 Sept (which you can read all about elsewhere in this
issue), but he's also doing a very special show that evening
at the Governor Hindmarsh - with a string quartet, no less!
Canada's The Hawksley Workman will also be on board in support.
Stuff from Puff: The good folks at mtv.com report that Garbage
have cancelled all touring plans after this month's Australian
visit: the entire European leg of their world tour has been
scrapped with the band announcing that they'll issue refunds
rather than, say, promising to reschedule the shows. Puff smells
a breakup on the wind... Speaking of breakups, The Distillers
are in disarray with the announcement that bassist Ryan Sinn
has bailed (following drummer Andy Granelli about six months
back), leaving Brody "Mrs Josh Homme" Dalle as the only remaining
member. "The Distillers are no more and it feels like a weight
has been lifted," Sinn posted on the band's MySpace page, "however,
I'll never get rid of the disgust inside from it all."... And
the breakup news keeps on a-coming: Black Nielson have announced
they've split after five years... on a cheerier note,
up-and-coming indie stars Wolf Parade have added former Hot
Hot Heat guitarist Dante DeCarlo to their touring lineup, although
there's no word as to whether he'll be a permanent 'Parader...
The enormous public campaign to save legendary
New York venue CBGB's from closure has failed: the club looks
set to be boarded up after landlords the Bowery Residents Committee
(who run one of New York's largest homeless shelters beneath
the venue) refused to enter into negotiations to extend the
lease, although a protracted legal battle seems almost certain...
The New Orleans flood/vigilante insanity continues, with
a couple of legendary musical types caught up in the madness
- Fats Domino has been found alive and well after being reported
missing, but Big Star leader Alex Chilton was still unaccounted
for as of press time... Oh, you rock stars
- always with the violence! Take Poison's guitarist CC DeVille
(or, as the police know him, Bruce Johannesson): he's just been
arrested on charges of "felony corporal injury on a cohabitant"
- or, in layman's terms, "he's alleged to have beaten up his
ex-girlfriend"... Meanwhile Marion "Suge" Knight had
his leg broken by a gunshot on Sun 28 Aug at a Miami party celebrating
Kayne West's appearance at the following night's MTV Video Music
Awards. He's apparently in a stable condition, but police hadn't
found the culprit by press time... And those
fists just keep on flying: Babyshambles' Pete Doherty can't
stop his wacky antics, according to nme.com, the latest of which
is allegedly going to Razorlight's dressing room at the Leeds
Festival the other weekend and headbutting lead singer Johnny
Borrell for no apparent reason. Security were called in to remove
Doherty after Borrell floored him and walked out. You go, John...
Vale, Dr Robert Moog: the synthesiser pioneer (and inventer
of the mini-Moog, the world's first portable synth, in 1964)
passed away on Sun 21 Aug at the age of 71. He had been diagnosed
with brain cancer four months earlier. There's not a single
electronic artist who doesn't owe this man a debt of musical
gratitude... And finally, it's also vale
to blues legend R.L. Burnside, who shuffled off this mortal
coil on Thurs 1 Sept. The 78 year old master enjoyed a late-period
career surge when Fat Possum signed him in 1991, going on to
sell hundreds of thousands of albums worldwide (most notably
1998's 'Come On In' and 'Ass Pocket Of Whiskey' his 1996 collaboration
with the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion). He wound down his touring
commitments after undergoing heart surgery in 1999, and had
reportedly been in poor health of late, though the cause of
death hadn't been reported when Puff went to press. He's survived
by his wife Alice May and twelve children. Rest well, big man.
Smashed Records have just taken delivery of a whole lot of classic
vinyl from 80s/90s indie labels like Bastard, Powertool and
Greasy Pop Records, meaning you'll be able to snatch up some
sweet bargains at their stall at the Moana Markets at Moana
Pioneer Community Hall on Sun11 Sept.
They were on our cover last issue and they're still in our hearts
today: they're After The Fall and they're playing at the Adelaide
UniBar on Sat 10 Sept with Airbourne and Grand Fatal.
A whole bunch of familiar faces are emerging from their winter hiatus: Josh Spier has a swag of new tunes and a shiny new band featuring guitarist Shane Shepherd (Thinktank/Frugals), drummer Suresh Meyer (EdisonMusic) and bassist Lyndon Gray (Triptych/Hard Yards). Sal Paradise have been writing too, as have Matt and Rachel, (also ex-EdisonMusic) who are almost - but not quite - ready to unleash their new project Newtonheath upon the world. They've roped in Harmony Boucher and booked in a collective What We Did On Our Break showcase show at the Jade Monkey on Sun 18 Sept, and they'd like you to come along and tell them what you reckon.
Is there any stopping Mere Theory? They're roaming this wide,
brown land of ours with In The Grey on the aptly-named Crossing
Borders tour, which will see the Enigma Bar reverberating to
their new Triple J-exclusive single You Never Win on
Sat 17 Sept, along with Forgetting Yesterday and The Open Season.
Remember that story about how that girl fell from the first floor at Marion Shopping Centre? Well, a bunch of locals are raising money for her treatment via "For Simone", a fundraising gig at Fowlers Live on Sat 17 Sept that features Torn From Rest, Preset Failure, 21 Division, 919, The Stanford Prison Experiment, Second Only To Wednesday, Wishlist and In Fiction.
And they're not the only people raising money for good causes:
The Rest, Poetikool Justice and Groove Warriors are holding
a fundraising show for Oxfam at Jive on Thurs 8 Sept.
And it keeps on coming: the Grace Emily are hosting a show for the Wilderness Society called 'Ocean Motion', with all proceeds going toward their marine ecology campaigns. The Mandala Project, the Rickety Old House Band, Leigh StarDust, The Casio Brothers and The Central Deli Band are all on board to make waves for our oceans on Sun 25 Sept.
Their album is just plain rad. Their live shows are nicely attended.
They seem to pop over to Adelaide reasonably often. Those are
just some of the reasons why you should get along to the Governor
Hindmarsh on Sat 17 Sept and see End Of Fashion, who'll be accompanied
b Neon and the hilariously named Elemeno-P.
Local punk label 2 Buck Records are showcasing their artists with a huge lineup at Fowler's Live: The Jerks, Stolen Youth, The Brews, Equal Minded, Before It All Ends and Bad Taste will all be punking it up on Sun 11 Sept.
Raaaaaaawwwwkkkk! Bloodduster have just released their first
ever DVD and they'll be re-enacting it in rock form at the Enigma
Bar on Fri 9 Sept, along with Los Diablos and Pigsteerer.
Mad props to the winners of the 2005 FOOM Awards (or, for the non-acronymically familiar, Festival Of Original Music, held every year by the good people of SCALA). Gongs were taken by Katie Greenhalf, Gary Stiliano, Adrian Miller and Raw Honey's Miranda Bradley and Sue Pratten. They've all scored themselves some studio time to lay down their respective tracks for the next SCALA CD (along with demo category winners Andrew Stennett, EG MacDonald and Jai Cafarella). Nice work, songwrights!
They're the future of rock'n'roll, you know: they're 67 Special,
they're about to drop their hotly-anticipated debut album 'The
World Can Wait', and they'll be doing their first ever Adelaide
headline gig at the Enigma Bar on Sat 1 Oct.
Speaking of the Enigma Bar, they'll be holding the next Necromancy gothic/industrial event 'Serpents, Swords & Sorcery' on Sat 10 Sept.
The UniSA Students Association are ready to celebrate the eventual
arrival of the new season with Spring Fest 2005 at the Magill
Campus Bar. Students and non-students alike will be able to
catch sets from The Vasco Era and ex-Adelaide girl Sarah McLeod
(playing tracks from her upcoming solo debut 'Beauty Was A Tiger').
And free buses will be running between the City East and Magill
campuses, just to make getting there and back a bit easier.
Here's Ms McLeod, and Ms McLeod's chair.
There's a brand new supergroup in these here parts: pray, welcome The Boats, made up of Matt Aulich (ex-Paradise Motel), Esme McDonald (ex-Penthouse - er, the band, rather than the glossy publication...) and Paul Shilton (ex-Quickspace) - and they're shows at the Jade Monkey (with No Through Road, Frontiers In Photography and Matt Bailey of Gaslight Radio) on Sat 10 Sept, and the Crown & Anchor on Sun 18 Sept.
Former Adelaide boy Jet O'Rourke is heading back our way with
his new trio The Gear (who have been added to the Coke Live'n'Local
bill, don't you know?) to push their self-titled CD-EP at the
Crown & Anchor on Fri 16 Sept, along with The Unspoken Things
and Fire Underground.
Oh, come on people: sure, the weather's being a bit silly at the moment, but that's no reason for you not to grab a brolly, or sunscreen, or some sort of wide-brimmed hat and...
