The Boat People
Yesyesyesyesyes
Frumpy/Shock
The Boat People are intelligent pop rockers for two reasons. Firstly their musical repertoire, despite always having a pop edge, is extremely broad in scope: big anthems, quiet folk, catchy choruses, a touch of punk. Secondly, their lyrics are such a friggin' delight to listen to, with metaphors, imagery and satire littered amongst a bit of straight talking. They're fun, they're colourful and they've been underrated for way too long now.
'Yesyesyesyesyes' is the first full length release by the Queenslanders
and it couldn't have come soon enough. Showing a mature sound on their
earlier EPs, The Boat People have managed to slip under most people's
radars, and it would just be tragic if this album does the same. Such
a lovely sound is produced with an ease of effort, in this way reminding
me very much of Death Cab For Cutie. The opening Clean is complex
pop, bouncing between moods of soothing peace and excited panic. Unsettle
My Heart follows nicely with a catchy, plod-along melody before
the chorus explodes into joy. Having proven that they know how to
write solid pop choruses, Irony is fast and edgy whilst She's
A Good Soul endearingly ambles before the rock out finish. Sink
Into The Sea's gentle vocals and folk sound lull us back down,
whilst assuring us of America's doom. As if that wasn't good enough,
Tell Someone Who Cares is a perfect balance of heartfelt sincerity
and angst.
The back half of the album is just as brilliant as the front, although more complex and therefore less user-friendly to the pure pop fan. Just say 'Yesyesyesyesyes'.
