Eighteen Visions
+ Wendy Icon, In Name And Blood
Adelaide UniBar,
Sat 20 Aug
A
mere forty-eight hours after another good show at the UniBar, we're
back again to see Eighteen Visions strut their stuff for the very
first time. It was a distinctly smaller crowd and a shorter evening
compared to Alexisonfire, but still amazing nonetheless.
Instantly the best moment of the evening was when Melbourne's In Name
And Blood took to the stage and jumped headfirst into their set without
actually announcing their arrival to the crowd, who were understandably
shocked at the amount of noise suddenly piercing the airwaves. I'm
always a fan of support bands who come out and play as if they should
be headlining, and they did just that, converting more than a few
in the crowd into new fans. Wendy Icon's set was flawless as always:
I don't think any other band can play as consistently tight as they
do. Their new material conjures up memories of good old eighties metal
bands (is anybody else making Axl Rose references?), and the band
performed a cover of Day Of Contempt's One By One, much to
the delight of the crowd.
Everything was forgotten instantly though from the second Eighteen Visions stepped out. The band amazed the crowd both musically and visually, performing tracks mostly from 'Obsession' and 'Vanity', while dropping in a new song from the new album they've now promised us. Vocalist James Hart stayed true to form with the arrogance and posing that only a true rock star can pull off, and the show was indeed one of the loudest I've ever been to.
The disappointments? Alas, not enough old material was played and the surpassingly short length of their set - a mere forty minutes or so with no encore. Still, if they wanted to leave fans literally salivating for more, it's a mission they've truly accomplished.
