Truth Corroded.
I was initially confused about my interview with locals Truth Corroded: I was supposed to speak to a guy called "Greg", but when I looked at their bio there was no Greg to be found. It turns out that he's known as Greg when acting as their manager, but when he's playing as their bass player, he's known as "Damon Shaw". These guys are so ready to rock that they even have stage names.
I ask Shaw what the band has been up to of late. "We've gone through a little period of upheaval the last couple of months..." Shaw begins, sounding as though he wants to confess. "In July our relatively new drummer left the band, and two months out from the CD launch we were left in a bit of a tough situation. Matt Barnett ended up coming back on board to help us with the CD launches and so on. However we think we've definitely found a permanent replacement who we'll be announcing in the next couple of weeks."
After a band member quits a band it's not often that you find them back in the saddle, so I ask Shaw how Barnett felt about rejoining something from which he'd only just severed himself. "He was really cool about the whole thing. When Matt left in January it was really amicable, he just wanted to take leave at the best possible time before we got into the promotion of the new album," Barnett replies. "I mean, we still had to push back the release of the album as a consequence. It was initially going to come out in March but we had to get Chris all trained up and stuff like that so that unfortunately pushed everything back a bit. Playing in Truth Corroded again, Matt's had to become a metal drummer again and that was half the reason he left, because he didn't want to play heavy music any more. At least with the CD launches now people are going to be hearing the drummer that actually played on the CD."
Their bio makes mention that Truth Corroded had been through a few lineup changes. "Yeah, Corey [Grieve, guitarist] joined the band April 2003, we went through a fair bit of change between September 2002 right up until mid-2003. In retrospect it really helped us pursue what the original members wanted us to ideally sound like and all of the guys that have been in the band since have helped us do that."
On their new album 'Our Enemy Is The Weapon' (and yes, the title
does have a nuclear disarmament message behind it), the band
decided to enlist some heavyweight sonic help by getting Alan
Douches, who works out of West West Side Studios in New Jersey,
to master the album. To my mind, mastering has always been the
final step just to make a recording sound like a CD more than
a tape. How naive I was. "Alan has done a lot of stuff in metal
and hardcore as well as a lot of big names like Sepultura, Hatebreed
and Converge and he's pretty experienced in that field. To be
honest, pretty much everything to do with the new album was
to do with taking risks. We thought that there are heaps of
albums that have been mastered by him so we thought we would
look into how much this was going to cost us. We found that
we had enough money so we though we'd do something different
for a change..." Shaw explains.
Considering the final product, was it worth it? "It's not remarkably different from something you could get at mastering suites within Australia," Shaw admits, "but I think it was all to do with employing some experience by getting someone who has worked on some of the albums that we may have used as a blueprint for our recording. I think it definitely has got that little bit of something there. He knows how to bring out that something special in a recording."
