 | Against The Grain.
On Sat 3 Sept, The Bridgeway Hotel will play host to the awesome all-ages, twelve-band metalfest, Against The Grain aka "The Great Adelaide Trendkill!" Helping organize the event is local metal outfit Double Dragon, whose vocalist, Lee, tells me how the show came together.
"The idea for Against The Grain came around January this year, around the time of Double Dragon's 'Have Them Destroyed' CD Launch," he recalls. "Joel Mazurek of The Jonestown Syndicate and I were talking about how it was a shame that our respective bands had, at that time, only played one show together. We talked about this throughout January before coming to the conclusion that there was no point waiting for someone else to put on a show with both of us on the bill; let's just fucking do one ourselves! Discussing a possible venue, we threw up the idea of taking metal back to the 'burbs and getting all of our favourite bands in the one place at the one time to have the biggest party of the year. So we had a start, and we had a venue, but what we also needed were bands: lots of them."
Thankfully, this next step wasn't to prove all that difficult. "I myself go to every metal gig going, pretty much, so I knew what I wanted to see straight away," says Lee. "It was really anything that went against the bandwagon-type shit you see day in, day out. Being in a band helps too; a lot of my friends are in bands playing around the country, which makes it a lot easier to get help when you need it. So Joel went off and got some bands, and I went off and did the same, and Against The Grain was born. After Shallow Grave and Truth Corroded, two of the bands on the bill, came aboard, it was a lot easier to find more bands; actually they found us. We had around five bands confirmed, and another ten wanting to play, so instead of having a gig with a five-band bill, we decided to have an all-day show, and turn it into a mini-festival - a metal showcase - with every band on the bill representing pretty much every style of metal you can think of. From the awesome soundscapes of Impartial to the sheer brutality of Sarsekim, Murder Hill and Blood Mason, this show has everything."
In addition to being an impressive metal extravaganza, Against The Grain will double as the Adelaide launch for Melbourne band Contrive's debut full-length release, 'The Meaning Unseen.' "Contrive were a late addition to the bill", Lee admits, "although I wanted them from the start. Double Dragon are close friends with them, and we didn't think it'd be fair to have them missing out on a party! And with their new material very close to release, and me being a big fan of the band myself, what better way to preview their new shit! Another late addition were Underminded, who we put on due to demand, basically. They're a young band (one that Joel has seen on a regular basis) that are creating a bit of a stir in the scene right now."
In addition to getting the chance to see an impressive line-up of bands, there's another good reason to attend Against The Grain, Lee tells me. "If you go off hard enough in the pit, there's a good chance you'll have your head on the first annual Against The Grain DVD, which will feature one song from every band on the bill", he says.
"So, in conclusion, if you like it heavy, you like it loud, or you just like having a fucking good time, then Against The Grain is for you!"
