Fountains Of Wayne
Out Of State Plates
Virgin/EMI
Fountains Of Wayne have been around for about a decade and, until
the Rachel Hunter-assisted success of Stacy's Mom, were virtually
unknown. So it stands to reason that the band had a plethora of non-album
material tucked away, and now they have the perfect opportunity to
release it all. There are very few bands that can maintain a high
level of quality in their catalogue outside of their albums, but for
the most part Fountains Of Wayne does it well, as demonstrated by
this two disc collection.
Personally, as a long-time fan of FOW, I've known and loved many of
these songs for years. The sheen still hasn't come off of them either;
I still find it hard to skip past many of the re-released b-sides.
Most of them are based on amusing concepts, like the infectious Janice's
Party, and the slower paced but no less memorable Karpet King.
Among the previously unreleased material is a cover of ...Baby
One More Time (the band never officially released it because it
got too popular on American radio), and there are two new songs thrown
in for good measure. One of them (Maureen) is probably one
of the band's highest tempo-ed songs ever, and is as catchy as their
catchiest. The other one, The Girl I Can't Forget, sucks. It's
a little indicative of the whole set: there are a few songs that could
have gotten the chop and brought the collection down to one brilliant
disc, but I'm sure the band would prefer to bring out as much material
as possible and let the listeners decide. I really don't mind: I'd
rather have more FOW than less.
