Foreshore.

ForeshoreGathered around in a small back room of Jive, all four members of Foreshore are discussing their second EP, the Chris "Superjesus" Tennent-produced 'October Train'. Moments prior to our chat, all but drummer Josh Cock were onstage to deliver an acoustic rendition of the CD to an guest list of media and other industry types in order to kick-start a bit of interest before their upcoming public launch. This shows the level of both their belief in their new material and their commitment to the promising future of the band.

"The band's line-up just changed this year," begins guitar/vocalist and principle songwriter, Nick Deegan. "We originally had the two Palmer brothers, Andrew and Kent, and they've now been replaced by Ed [Mitchell] on guitar and Tim [Anderson] on the bass, but all up Foreshore have been together for about five or six years." Mitchell picks up the story: "I came into the band because Myles [Mayo, from Special Patrol] introduced me to Nick one night and then we officially met again to talk about the band. I got some songs to learn and then I started rehearsing with these guys."

"Before he knew it he was sitting next to me in a car while I was farting all the way to Melbourne," Cock chips in.

"Ed's first gig with us was actually in Melbourne at The Espy," Deegan continues. "It was quite an eventful gig as his amp blew up in front of a few hundred people; he had to use my amp and I used an acoustic guitar. But what we thought was going to be a disaster turned out to be a really good show, so it's funny how things fall into place. I find that it's so much easier to perform when you go somewhere like Melbourne because you don't know anyone in the crowd and they don't know you. Here, because we've been around for a while we're playing to a room full of our friends and fans, if something goes wrong or if we do anything a little bit out of the ordinary you get given shit for it afterwards."

Deegan's also aware that his mum and friends are listening to him publicly baring his soul in his lyrics. "I've always written the basics of the songs and while some of them are about my life and things that have happened to me, even if they're then embellished a bit, others are just far-fetched ideas, and then the rest of the band then takes them from there... I'm a lot happier with the lyrics on this EP than on the last one ['Imagine If']. I think on the last one there was a lot of subliminal messages that even I've forgotten what I was actually writing about, but on this one I think I was willing to put my heart on paper a bit more. Maybe someone has gone through something similar and they can connect to the songs, and if you put a nice hook and a melody to that then that's why they might like the band, I guess."

With a couple of songs from their debut receiving a fair spin on radio, Nova 91.1 has added their new single Goodnight to their playlist. For Foreshore it's now a matter of putting out the feelers and trying to attract further interest from other outside parties. "I'm hoping that we can move onto another level," says Deegan, "not so much musically but professionally. Because we don't have any management I'm trying to do all the PR and what any record label would try and do." " We are looking for management," adds Anderson. "We've got a bit of interest from managers in Melbourne and Sydney so now we've just got to sort through things and find out more about these people -what they've done and what they'd like to do with us - because we want someone who's serious about the band as we are. Otherwise, there's no point."

Foreshore launch 'October Train' at Fowlers Live on Sat 20 Aug with Special Patrol.
