Nearly three years after releasing their debut, a self-titled six-track EP, locals Diatribe have produced their first full-length release, 'A Product of Hate'. There wasn't much of a story behind their decision to start recording it; as vocalist Josh Smith recalls, "The EP was still selling well, and we'd been playing numerous shows in both Adelaide and interstate; the band had also written a batch of new material, so we thought the time was right to record an album and get something new out there. We had time to prepare, with good pre-production time, as well as a bigger budget for the release. The EP was only intended to be a quick, low-budget demo to get our music out there for gigs and promotion. Since then, we've gained a lot more experience in the recording process, understanding sounds, and getting the best out of our equipment. We wanted the album to be a far better release than the EP, giving the listeners that more polished and abrasive sound, but still intense nonetheless. We also wanted to give this CD a more professional look through the artwork, photos and promotion."
The band should hopefully encounter little difficulty promoting and selling the new release interstate, for during the last few years, they have been busy touring and making a name for themselves in other states. "We've performed in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane on multiple occasions," Smith tells me, "and have actually only just returned from doing a few shows in Melbourne. We're booked for a huge metalfest in Brisbane in October, with more shows planned for other states - including Western Australia - later in the year to promote the new album. One of the best things about touring is that you not only get your music out there, but you also get to meet some great bands and gain some new fans along the way.
"We played this gig in Queensland up in Noosa at the Waldschloss German Club; it looked like the house out of Hansel and Gretel set in the war jungles of 'Platoon.' It'd been raining all week, and we had to play in this big leaking marquee that was attached to the side of the building. The ground was still waterlogged, so they had to place wooden boards down to make some sort of dry, stable stage for the bands to play on. There was this banner in front of the bands advertising the club's $8 schnitzel nights, and a German sausage sizzle going on up the back. When we hit the stage, and I announced that we were Diatribe from Adelaide, I was met with a cry of 'Well, fuck off back there, then!' Luckily, it didn't take long for the smartarse who'd said that, and his mates in the large crowd, to start moshing. All in all, it was a great gig."
Overseas distribution of the new album is also a distinct possibility. "The international media response for the first EP has been fantastic, with great reviews from North and South America, and Europe," Smith enthuses. "We pretty much sent it all over the world, which has now laid a good foundation for the new album; it should make it easier for it to be accepted and distributed in those countries where we sent the EP. We hope to cement overseas distribution fairly soon and see what happens from there. Obviously, like all bands, we think it would be great to go overseas to play some day."
