Weird War
Illuminated By The Light
Drag City/Inertia
If you've followed the post-Make Up path of Ian Svenonius and Michelle Mae you'll know 'Illuminated By The Light' is their fourth full length album and the third under the Weird War moniker. Guitarist Alex Minoff remains pivotal to the group's sound while Trans Am's Sebastian Thomson brings the beat via drums, roto-toms, bongos and more.
Like its predecessor, last year's 'If You Can't Beat 'Em Bite 'Em' this record shows off some juicy bass lines and increasingly fuzzy, phasey, Prince-meets-Deep-Throat guitar work, and like any Weird War record it's packed with infectious musical and vocal hooks and, consequently, it's dance floor fodder. As always, Svenonius' lyrics are at once clever, colourful, inane and sloganistic. Thomson's drum prowess is for the most part suppressed, the math-rock powerhouse content to knock out straight beats with flashes of cowbell and handclaps.
Whether it's frazzled acoustic guitar, ragged hand drums and desperate
falsetto as on Earth, Mama, Woman, Girl, Child or kebab-house
aerobics mixtape mantra ala Mental Poisoning, Weird War lays
the funk and the cheese on thick. If you don't like lots of wah wah
guitar steer well clear. For those of you who think you know what
you're getting into, start practicing your sex face and hip thrusts
in the mirror now.
