Timor Leste - Freedom Rising
EMI

This compilation of new and unreleased material from Australian artists was put together by Paul Kelly in an effort to raise funds for Timor as well as to increase awareness of Australia's southern neighbour. Far from being a mess of tracks that simply didn't make the grade, the collection boasts some truly great songs.

Hoodoo Gurus get things underway with the distinctly-Gurus-sounding This Is Your Time, followed on by a surprisingly good burst of pop in the form of The Living End's Live It Up. Bob Marley gets quite a guernsey here with great versions of Guava Jelly and No Woman No Cry performed by Renee Geyer and the Dili All Stars, respectively. Other artists featured include The John Butler Trio (with a country funk mix of Treat Yo Mama), Missy Higgins, Kasey Chambers, Wilcannia Mob and Dallas Crane, who contribute an acoustic waltz version of Numb All Over. There's also a new tune from Mr Kelly himself which sees him teaming up with nephew Dan on God Told Me To. The Cruel Sea's No Choice is another noteworthy inclusion, as is The Cat Empire's Miserere which closes the record on a poignantly uplifting note.

All in all this compilation would certainly be worth owning on its own merits as a collection of songs; however, the fact that proceeds from it will be going towards helping a cause such as Timor makes it even more worthwhile. The worst thing about this CD is that it makes you wish it were summer: guess we'll just have to wait a bit longer.
