Sound Environment
Shock
Compilation albums can be such a hit or miss affair: either they're too disparate or they just run over the same style 'til it all sounds the same. However, I'd have to give full marks to whoever chose the artists for 'Sound Environment'. This album is a fundraiser for WWF, and since it's got the cute panda silhouette you know that part proceeds are going to save the environment rather than buying steroids for American wrestler-actors. No doubt remains that this really is inspired by the World Wildlife Fund when you see the booklet about environmental issues inside. In fact, the packaging of the whole thing really is top quality, all done of course on 100% recycled paper.
We all like to support a good cause, but let's be honest: the reason
you buy a CD is because you like the music. 'Sound Environment' contains
two discs with a total of 35 tracks from all the environmentally-friendly
artists you'd hope to find on an album like this. It has your big
name hippies Jack Johnson, Xavier Rudd, and John Butler, but the big
bonus is that it's not just the hit songs you've heard too many times.
Instead, its Bubble Toes, Solace and What You Want,
respectively. International superstars include Coldplay, The Verve
and Radiohead, providing Politik, Lucky Man and the
timeless classic Fake Plastic Trees. There are commercial giants
like Pete Murray and Jamiroquai and, for the ladies, there's Missy
Higgins and The Waifs. However, being a self-confessed indie snob,
it is tracks like the gorgeous Somersault from Decoder Ring
and The Thrills' Not For All The Love In The World that pleased
me most of all.
It kind of surprises me that this album has been released so far before Christmas because it would make an ideal gift. Next time you're thinking of buying a chill-out album, this could be it: support a good cause and listen to relaxing music at the same time.
