Modey Lemon
The Curious City
Mute/EMI
Having read the monologue by Anders St. Anders on the cover sleeve,
I did all I could to prepare myself for an introspective, spoken word
album, despite my confusion as to why Modey Lemon would produce such
a record. Sweet relief was mine when I heard the first rocking chords
of Bucket Of Butterflies - and I soon learned that for the
rockin' there was to be no stoppin' on 'The Curious City'.
But rockin' is so passe these days, so Modey Lemon have thrown in
a bit of rollin' for good measure (In Another Land and Red
Lights are sure to put a swagger in your step). Still, as listenable
as it is, 'The Curious City' is no stand-out. A few singles may catch
the ear of generous radio stations, but I fear this album may fall
by the wayside. But perhaps that is just true of my musical path and
others will accept it gratefully. Hell, to tell you the truth it's
slowly growing on me too. If you're in the mood for late '60s blues,
rollicking '70s rock or late '90s garage rock, then Modey Lemon should
do the trick, aptly blending the musical decades to create a swirl
of rock with just enough hooks and variety to give it one more listen,
and then one more and then...
'The Curious City' is definitely worth a listen and is work that the Modey Lemon boys should be proud of, regardless of its commercial success - whatever that may be.
