Louis XIV
The Best Little Secrets Are Kept
Atlantic/Warner
San Diego's Louis XIV are a dirty little bunch. 'The Best Little Secrets Are Kept', in the oh-so-cool vein of '70s glam rock bands like T-Rex, is full of slacker-paced rock songs full to the brim with sex. The music is cool and catchy, but the lyrics are often overdone; it's all a little too nauseatingly arrogant to be my cup of tea.
The radio single Finding Out True Love Is Blind is a slick
piece of cool with a semi-disco drum beat, drawn out guitar chords,
a touch of piano and swaggering lyrics. However, the quiet, Streets-esque
bridge, featuring gentle female vocals and piano, takes away the momentum
and seems well, fake. But then Louis XIV are pretentiousness personified,
with God Killed The Queen a prime example of arrogance, as
singer Jason Hill states the rules that need to be followed in order
to "take [his] body tonight" over the top of a simple, slow and groovy
guitar riff. Whilst the posing is initially entertaining, repeated
listens have left me pretty darn annoyed by the excessive tickets
that Louis XIV have on themselves.
Bands like The Strokes and The Dandy Warhols can get away with their
self-love because they can make it relatively covert. Louis XIV on
the other hand are very happy to openly praise themselves. They're
likely to alienate many potential fans due to their arrogance and
explicit lyrics. A pity, since they'll miss All The Little Pieces,
a charming orchestral track, with some touching vocals. So, love 'em
or hate 'em, Louis XIV can play well - but with potty mouths like
theirs, they'd certainly be told off by most mothers.
