Giants Of Science
Here Is The Punishment
Plus One/Reverberation
There's too much melody in this album for it to be straight "hard rock", as the press release claims. Although not as dark and heavy as Giants of Science's debut album, 'Here Is The Punishment' is full of lively and fast rock songs that frequently vary in tempo and rhythm. There certainly is a fair degree of aggression, but there's no unrelenting force behind it. Instead, Giants of Science go at the songs from a number of angles. The trade-off of pure aggression for creative variation was a wise move, as the feisty attitude is still crystal clear and comes without the monotonous overkill of one or two power chords.
Here Is The Punishment is a fantastic, punchy opener that builds
in momentum and explodes into chorus. Zodak (Evil Cosmic Enforcer)
is equally rewarding, similar in pace and passion, but the album
goes downhill from there. Excluding the gentle instrumental Vote
One and the just-plain-annoying screamer Sisters, each
and every song has legitimate merit based upon passion and creativity.
The trouble is that a pattern emerges on the album which sees Giants
Of Science taking a very formulaic approach to their songs. By the
closing Dead Sea you realise what's coming: chorus, quiet bit,
guitar solo and so forth. Having said that, Mega Fauna follows
the formula, yet is still impressively mesmerising.
Giants Of Science made a really noble attempt but 'Here Is The Punishment' is an amiable acquaintance rather than a close friend.
