Finch
Say Hello To Sunshine
UMG
A random recommendation exposed me to Finch, and I'm grateful: this is one good album! For two weeks it's been glued in my Discman; I listened to it everywhere, dreading the time I would have to write this review and find a replacement.
Finch have quite a distinctive edge to them, due particularly to the very different style and voice of lead singer Nate Barcalow. Although they're very obviously heavy punk, I think quite a lot of the characteristics are traditionally metal, like their occasionally histrionic vocals. (Indeed, they started off as a suspiciously heavy metal-sounding Californian band called Numb until their second guitarist turned them onto punk influences.) And it works beautifully.
Insomniatic Meat shapes the sound and emotion of the whole
album, reminding me of a punk Deftones, and it leads into the excellent
Revelation Song. A Face Of Mind is what I would call
a hardcore attempt at a "feel-good" song. The guitar plays almost
continuous chords which sound almost sickeningly wrong: however, yet
again, it surprisingly comes together as probably one of the best
tracks on the album.
I profoundly urge you to go out and get your hands on this CD now. Just think about poor Jess all alone and almost Finch-less... almost.
