Emiliana Torrini
Fisherman's Woman
Rough Trade/Shock
Intimate and atmospheric songs are the speciality of Emiliana Torrini,
who has the voice of an angel child (and who some might recognise
from Gollum's Song in 'Lord Of The Rings'). This delicate and
moody record is made up of twelve evocative and heartfelt tunes that
place you in a dreamlike state. It is themed around loss: sometimes
it's dripping with sadness but more frequently imbued with almost
magical optimism.
Opening gambit Nothing Brings Me Down gradually builds from
sparse beginnings; acoustic guitar and light touches of piano blend
into a textured, handcrafted jewel. Sunny Road is a slow burn
highlight, the loose Spanish-style guitar stealing you away into a
summer reverie. Lifesaver floats along a mysterious fairy-tale
accordion melody, accompanied by the ambient creak of boats on water.
Honeymoon Child was written by Smog's Bill Callahan; Next
Time Around sounds like it could've been written by Ben Folds,
with its swelling piano and strummed guitar. Heartstopper is
full of lyrics beautiful in their stark simplicity: "I drink too much
and smoke too fast / This city's clipped my innocence / Coffee's pouring
out my ears / It's the only thing they have in here," and "Laugh out
loud, my life's a mess / I have gone too far in my lifelessness."
Fisherman's Woman sounds as if it could of leaped out of a
dusty, lost Leonard Cohen session and Thinking Out Loud whispers
of Eastern Europe with the addition of bouzouki alongside Torrini's
voice and piano. Serenade is carried along by multi-tracked
vocals into a moonlit dream of clouds, dark vines, temptations and
new tomorrows. It sounds like it could've been written thirty years
ago.
Get into this record: it feels like it's been written for you and you only.
