Puff 'n' Stuff.

Hey, readers with a keen interest in this industry we call music: the new Australasian Music Index Directory (or, as we in the biz call it, the AMID) has just come out and dB Magazine, as its exclusive agents in SA, have twenty copies for sale here in our luxuriously-appointed office. Well, nineteen. Oh, it's now eighteen - actually, if you want to grab the country's most comprehensive list of contact details for record companies, booking agencies, management, venues and more all around this nation and its Pacific brethren, might Puff politely suggest you get in here ASAP, since they're already selling like the very hottest of cakes?

Call it comedy, call it an art statement - Puff just calls it barefaced lying. It seems that The Dukes Of Haphazard are launching their 'Live In Japan' CD at The Underground on Fri 12 Aug, but freely confess that it wasn't recorded in Japan at all (although it is actually live). Of course, perhaps the "live" has the short vowel and they're simply claiming that they reside in Japan - which, now Puff thinks about it, would simply be another damned lie! You're just compounding your folly, Dukes. In any case, it's all ages and Bad Taste, Fighting Words and Pulsating Porpoise will be in support.

How many times can Michael Dixon & The Rest sell Jive out? They've managed it thrice and going to for their fourth one on Fri 12 Aug.

Don't forget that Youth Group, who graced our cover last issue, will be launching their reissued 'Skeleton Jar' album at the Enigma Bar on Fri 19 Aug, along with The Red Riders and Special Patrol.

Those dancing fools The Presets are coming to Jive with a new single (Down Down Down) and a whole lot of shakin' on Thurs 11 Aug, with any excess shaking being provided by Wolf & Cub and Poly & The Statics.

Let the glorious Festival season begin with the first announcements for the Falls Festival at Lorne and Tasmania! Among the acts confirmed for the nation's finest New Years celebration are The Shins (in one of the worst kept secrets of recent weeks, thanks to the band's enthusiastic posting on their website), The Dandy Warhols, Ozomatli, Wolfmother, Pete Murray, The Beautiful Girls, The Vasco Era, Faker, TZU and The Grates. And that's just for starters! It sold out in record time last year, so you might want to get tickets sooner rather than later - and they go on sale Mon 15 Aug.

Speaking of Festivals, mad props to Wolf & Cub for flying the SA flag on the recently announced Homebake bill: yep, the 'Cub will be representing Adelaide's musical interests in The Domain in Sydney on Sat 3 Dec, alongside chancers like Something For Kate, The Finn Brothers, The Living End and so forth. Make Puff proud, lads, make Puff proud.

The Drones are coming to Adelaide for what's set to be the last time for the foreseeable future - check out Blake Lewis' interview with the band at dbmagazine.com.au, but you'd also best make sure you catch the band at Jive on Sat 20 Aug, where they'll play along with Southpaw and The Unspoken Things.

Mr Ash Grunwald has been wowing them far and wide with his uniquely deft root-bluesery, so you'd be some sort of crazy person is you weren't at the Governor Hindmarsh on Fri 12 Aug to seem him make that axe sing, with John Woods in support.

And, in a bit of a coup, for once Adelaide gets something that Melbourne misses out on: the extraordinary vocalist/musician/performance artist Diamanda Galas brings her new production 'Guilty Guilty Guilty' to the Adelaide Town Hall on Sun 16 Oct - she's also visiting Sydney and Brisbane, but for once we can thumb our noses to our immediate east.

But just before you start feeling too good about things, note that another mess of tours are giving Adelaide a miss: Teenage Fanclub reckon we're not worth their time in August and Maximo Park are skipping Adelaide in September, as are Electrelane and Scout Niblett. Puff's not angry - just very, very disappointed. And angry.

After popping by recently with Doves, Neon are returning to launch their debut album (cunningly entitled 'Neon') at the Enigma Bar on Fri 12 Aug, with The News and Joshua Spier opening proceedings in fine style.

It's been a while since we've seen Snap To Zero in this neck of the woods. In fact they've been a little quiet locally since releasing 'Where Is The Free World?' earlier this year, but they're getting back into the whole live thing with a Crown & Anchor show on Fri 19 Aug, along with New Element and Mope Dialer.

The nation's most rock'n'roll couple are returning for a couple of shows in support of their new double album: Mr Dave Graney and Ms Clare Moore have just released 'Hashish And Liquor', with a disc each drawn from their respective twisted muses. Graney ('Hashish') and Moore ('Liquor') pop into their former hometown of Mt Gambier for a show at the Commercial Hotel on Fri 12 Aug before coming to the big smoke for a Grace Emily gig on Sun 14 Aug.

Lost Boy Found are making their first ever trip to Adelaide for a couple of shows with Edward: catch their hardcore guitar action at the Exeter on Rundle St on Fri 19 Aug (also with Blow Up Betty) and The Underground on Sat 20 Aug (along with Liability Of My Own and Her Latest Flame).

The world of competitive Rock Paper Scissors is a hard and bitchy one: many came to the Sky City over the last few weeks with dexterous hands and big dreams but all slunk home broken, shamed, but perhaps a little wiser for the experience. All, that is, except Matthew Pistor who will take the state's dreams of victory to the Gold Coast for the national finals on Sun 28 Aug and then - oh, how fervently we dream! - off to Canada for the world championships in October. Excelsior, Matthew: and he's seen here with vanquished runner-up Lachy McFarlane, who will no doubt take Matt's place in the event that he can't fulfill his duties as SA's RPS representative - for example, if he should shame the sport's name by having posed nude years ago, when he was a struggling model with little idea of the glittering future that lay ahead. So if you're reading this, Lachy, Puff has a dossier that you might be interested in...

The YWCA are holding their annual Y Ball on Fri 19 Aug at the Radisson Playford Ballroom to raise funds for their many community projects, and that in itself should be enough reason for you to go out and grab tickets right this minute. However, there's even more reason for you to support the good work of the YWCA: musical entertainment on the night will be provided by the live funk explosion that is Goose, who will not only be playing in big band mode but splitting off into smaller combos throughout the night to play in their other guises (Gosling, Suction Cap, Hammond Eggs etc).

Little Birdy will be a-chirping it up at Heaven on Fri 12 Aug, along with Canada's Tegan & Sara and Mr Bob Evans.

And there are a tonne of tours coming (yes, Puff's weighed it: it's exactly one metric tonne) in the next few weeks: The Panics launch their new album at the Adelaide UniBar on Fri 26 Aug, Clare Bowditch returns for one pre-album show with The Feeding Set at the Jade Monkey on Sat 27 Aug, Gyroscope pop over to play the Flinders Uni Tavern on Fri 2 Sept, the same night that Epicure pop into the Gov, Regurgitator are at the Adelaide UniBar on Sat 3 Sept, Shihad return in triumph to Heaven on Sun 4 Sept (with Cog in tow), Fozzy will tear Fowler's Live a new one on Wed 7 Sept, legendary songwriter Jimmy Webb with light up the Gov on Thurs 8 Sept, Bloodduster will get all fast and loud at Enigma on Fri 9 Sept, the same night that the magnificent Martha Wainwright comes to the Gov, and US indie legends Spoon return to Adelaide on Sat 10 Sept. And that's just the next couple of weeks!

Yep, there's a crazy amount of stuff going on at the moment, which is why your muscles are trembling just holding up this enormous, rocktastic issue -and you can be part of it all simply by opening the front door in order to...
