Global music biz to hit $1.8 Trillion
The entertainment and media industry is the strongest it's been in five years - and will grow 7.3% each year to US$1.8 trillion in 2009. The woes of the recording market are over: the digital market is going to see it grow in leaps and bounds. This is according to PricewaterhouseCooper's 'Global Entertainment And Media Outlook: 2005 - 2009'. The growth will be provided by the expanding online distribution of music, films and video games, and an upswing of advertising from $358 billion to $477 billion. The new income created by technology - like ringtones, mobile phone downloads and legal downloads - will grow from US$11.4 billion in 2004 to $73 billion in 2009.
Recorded music started to grow last year, rising by 5.8% to $38 billion. Globally this sector will grow by 8.3% a year to $56 billion in 2009, mostly helped by digital distribution and ring tone spending.
The Asia-Pacific will remain the fastest growing sector in the next five years rising 11.6% per year to reaching $432 billion to 2009, with China to replace Japan as the region's biggest market. America remains the largest global music market but the slowest growing.
PricewaterhouseCooper estimates that the Australian entertainment and media sector will grow by 7% a year to 2009 to A$29 billion. (Last year it was $20.8 billion).
Muses sold
Adelaide's five-store Muses record chain
has been sold for $1 million. It went into voluntary administration
in May with debts said to be $3.1 million. The new owners have
retained 36 of the 37 staff. Administrator John Hart of Ferrier
Hodgson wouldn't reveal the name of the owner but said it was
an Australian company associated with the music industry. Could
this be Sanity, we wonder?

MMF forum: a taste of money
This month's Music Managers Forum seminar is 'Money: Turning your art into a paying gig'. Representatives from APRA and PPCA will look into copyright, royalties and knowing what you are entitled to, grants available and how to apply for them. It's held at Fowler's Live at 7.30 pm on August 15; there's a $5 entry fee for non-members.
More SA funding
The South Australian government announced
three arts initiatives worth $600,000. 'Out Of The Square',
a project in which independent companies will present shows
in local government venues around six arts centres, will receive
$150,000 a year. A pilot program to develop a new Indigenous
Arts Strategy will be set up, with $100,000 over two years.
Major artwork commissions will be doubled to $200,000 a year.
Pixies, Franz for summer?
The Pixies have told US magazines they are looking at doing some Australian shows during our summer, which could fit in with the rumours (yet again) of their playing the Big Day Out. Franz Ferdinand have also suggested they could be back in January, admitting they love this place. '90s US band Presidents of the United States of America, fronted by Melbourne-born Chris Barron, could be playing here later in the year. That tip is from their new Aussie label, Brisbane-based Blast Records, which is releasing their new album 'Love Everybody'. Village Roadshow is also trying to entice Jessica Simpson on a promo visit when her movie 'The Dukes Of Hazzard' opens here.
Payola reports
Two reports on so-called unethical behaviour
in the Oz music industry - on Triple J's Hack program, and Seven
Network's 'This Day Tonight' - created angry responses. Adam
Zammit, publisher of 'The Brag' went on air and gave Triple
J's magazine 'jmag' a serve after 'Hack' suggested some street
papers indulge in editorial for ads. Melbourne 3PBS responded
to claims its 'Studio 5 Live' showcase on Thursdays forced acts
to pay. PBS station manager Roger Jones explains that it costs
PBS $500 per show including additional hire and personnel, and
that they "encourage them to make a contribution to cover our
production costs but we do not make it conditional (ie: bands
are chosen on merit). Indeed, out of the past 46 performances
only 9 have made a contribution and not all for the same amount."
And has Kyle Sandilands initiated legal action after Seven's
dig he was playing the Tamara Jaber track released on his own
record label?
Club DJ Walker joins EMI music

Slipknot makes you crash!
A study has found that aggressive music makes racing video game players go faster and crash more often. Scottish researcher Gianna Cassidy, 24, of Glasgow Caledonian University, sent more than 80 hardcore and novice gamers on a drive through 'Project Gotham Racing' with different soundtracks playing in their virtual car radio. Relaxing music slows your driving. Slipknot turns you aggro and made you crash, especially when played loud. Best driving is from turning the radio off.
Womadelaide makes $5.7M
This year's Womadelaide injected $5.7 million
into South Australia's economy, says an impact study - a 20%
rise from the previous event. Over 65,000 people attended over
its three days. 40% of these came from intestate or overseas,
staying an average of six nights in Adelaide and spending $681
each. Premier and arts minister Mike Rann said it justified
turning the festival into an annual event.
Skycity launches open mic night
SkyCity Adelaide is giving South Australia's amateur singers, bands and musicians the chance to make a name for themselves through its Open Mic Night program. It initially runs over 12 weeks, with a final showcase event on Sunday September 25. The winner gets the chance to play at a Darwin venue. Each week, one act will be invited to return for a repeat performance at the final showcase event. Registration forms are available by phoning 08 8218 4250, but you have to be 18+. Skycity Adelaide's Communications Manager Alice Bowran says that of the 32 acts which played in the first four weeks, four have gone through to the finals. The first of these had travelled from Whyalla.
No Livid again?
It looks as though Brisbane's Livid Festival
might not happen for a second year in the row. It was cancelled
last year with the proprietors citing lack of enough headliner
acts, but was due back this year. Peter Walsh who founded Livid
16 years ago told the Courier Mail, "It would be announced by
now if it was going ahead."
Loverso leaves shock
Chris Loverso's International Label Manager leaves Shock August 12 after four years to join one of Australia's biggest toy companies.
iTunes in Japan
Apple launched iTunes in Japan last week.
The delay in Australia has been due to tough and protracted
negotiations with Sony BMG. Sony BMG is not impressed that iTunes
can only be played on Apple's iPod players. It wants iTunes
to agree to having Microsoft's WMA and Sony's ATRAC digital
forms before it gives it the okey-dokey.
