Your Whole Life Is Leading Up To This
Inertia
After a voice anounces "You whole life, to this, is leading up, right
now" the album opens with the eerie ghost sounds of its title track.
The Swedish duo then drop into first single They Do It, a flashy
affair mixed with an enchanting gloom. Ten more songs proceed in a
melancholic mix of looped beats, dark synthesisers, majestic melodies,
and threads of guitar, all with slightly gothic undertones and an
atmosphere like fog in a horror film. The album peaks midway with
the deep affecting chorus of In The Dirt, and the poignant
Love Earth Cry, featuring Jessica Pilnes.
Apparently the album was inspired by the TV series 'Six Feet Under' and its influence is revealed in the songs, which are usually about regret, lost love and death. At times it feels bleak, but it manages to be consistently uplifting. Mattias Lindblom has a soaring and heartfelt voice and the album sometimes relies heavily on this emotive and powerful device and is left unsupported by the music Anders Wollbeck provides. For the most part however, they compliment each other with a spooky beauty.
It should be heartbreakingly beautiful. And it is... sometimes. They hit their stride during choruses when the tempo lifts and there are several layers of instrumentation. These moments reveal the level of potential within their sound. In between, however, things seem a little light around the edges: their flow loses intensity and feels flat. These rise and falls, though, are part of the charm and the overall effect is a journey well worth taking.
