Dub For Straights: 1993 Sessions Salmonella Dub
Dub For Straights: 1993 Sessions
Virgin/EMI

Well now, isn't this an oldie! This is that little old New Zealand band at its roots: the earliest recording session the band has on record, beginning in the summer of 1992/1993, almost nothing like the Salmonella Dub of 2005. It's mainly a live recording from Bob's Magic Carpet Warehouse in Woolston, Christchurch: a strange venue, placed right next to the Horse Knackers Yard!

I don't usually fall in love with an album immediately but this is an exception: I can't turn it off. It's something that I can have playing in the background, or loudly whilst making myself food, or even something to chill to as I fall asleep at night. The first song is nothing out of the ordinary but as the album goes on it get a bit... well, weird! Track three consists of Indian-themed music, perhaps sounding like the Beatles boosted 20 years into the future. The first song with real words on it is We The Dub Yore, which is a lot of swearing, basically. This is one of two songs on the EP that was not recorded at the Carpet Warehouse (along with Regi Flute, it was recorded about a year later) and it's a good song, don't get me wrong. I'm all up for a bit of language now and again but sometimes it can be a little over the top.

If you like dub or reggae, you will seriously fall in love with 'Dub For Straights'. And if you're too tight to spend your dosh, at least find the song Cincinnati Kid, you won't regret it. To think, something's finally convinced me that dub reggae is good!
