Out West
Shock
Surely you've all heard of Gomez by now, and of course you've all got at least one of their albums in your collection. Right? Well, if you're one of the unenlightened among us, 'Out West' is probably the closest you'll come to a perfect introduction. If you're a fan, you'll already own this. You'll need no convincing other than this reviewer telling you 'Out West' is a damn good live album. That's right, baby: it's live as.
Recorded over three nights at the famous Fillmore in San Francisco
in January this year, this two disc set captures a band at their height
and draws fairly equally from their previous four studio albums. Opening
with a synth-enhanced Get Miles, a quick "hello San Francisco"
then into the energetic Shot Shot, it's clear from the outset
that Gomez aren't content with providing a juke-box performance. The
set list ducks and weaves through fan favourites such as Whippin'
Piccadilly, Bring It On and We Haven't Turned and
includes covers of both Tom Waits' Going Out West and Nick
Drake's Black Eyed Dog, the latter of which segues beautifully
into Gomez's own Free To Run. Improvisation features heavily
and provides an insight into how brilliant the band are as musicians,
all the time remaining tasteful and true to the original songs. No
better example can be shown than Revolutionary Kind, which
closes out disc one at an epic 11 minutes.
If you're one of the few who've never seen Gomez live - and really, you've no excuse as they've toured Australia five times already - you need to own this album to hear what you've missed. If you're one of the many that have seen them, you need to own this album to remind yourself of one of the best nights of your life.
