Dreamaker
Human Device
Arise/Earache/Shock
Dreamaker have managed to create a serious work with their debut 'Human Device', and while it still has the hooks you would expect, it certainly has more to offer than your standard power metal.
Vocalist Elisa C. Martin has managed to find more interesting subject
matter for this work, such as the opener Eye Of War which is
about front line photographers. There is, of course, the occasional
erroneous use of the English language (Dreamaker hail from Spain),
which can be both humorous and frustrating, but overall the lyrics
are more intelligent than the usual dragon-slaying. The hooks are
still there, the melody lines catchy without becoming trite, and her
vocal style is somewhat reminiscent of Lacuna Coil's Cristina Scabbia,
bringing depth and character without being the overly polished operatic
style of most female vocalists in the genre. Ark 666 from Impaled
Nazarene also makes an appearance to do some guest vocals on Welcome
To My Hell, giving a little more diversity.
Guitarists Albert Maroto and Mat’as Sosa are also very accomplished. With surprisingly complex leads occasionally thrown in behind the vocal lines, they show both flair and taste. Maroto is also responsible for much of the writing credits and keyboards. There is some excellent orchestration without it becoming bombastic, mixed in with some excellent industrial sounds.
It's not perfect, but it is certainly one of only a few power metal albums that can be listened to seriously and with a discerning ear. Hopefully this trend will continue with this rising band.
