The Used
+ After The Fall, Irrelevant
Horden Pavilion, Sydney, Thurs 12 June
After selling out The Roundhouse in a mere matter of minutes, The Used's first Australian show was hastily shoved over to the considerably larger Horden Pavilion, and still the band managed to sell the place out, leaving desperate fans paying scalpers up to three hundred dollars at the gate. And considering it's the band's first time on our shores and the fact they only played one show (sure, they performed at the Crusty Demons show in Brisbane but does that really count?), are we really all that surprised? The place was packed, the bands were loud, and the crowd was suitably excited.
But the main difference between a show in Sydney and a show in Adelaide? Well, very rarely in Adelaide do you ever miss out on the first support band because you're still standing in line outside waiting to get in because there's that many people. All apologies to Irrelevant, who from what I heard played an amazing set. I did manage to catch all of After The Fall though, and were thoroughly impressed with their performance. To see them on such a large stage and playing considerably harder than they usually do was impressive.
It was painfully obvious, however, that support bands were a mere formality preventing fans from finally seeing The Used; and from start to finish the entire band played up to this fact - something that was frankly a little disappointing. As much as I love the guy, front man Bert McCraken came across somewhat obnoxious and overly cocky, and the rest of the band didn't say two words the entire set. Bassist Jepha Howard did however provide amusement by exploring the entire stage while playing, much to the delight of the screaming fans below.
But as far as music goes, the band played amazingly well, opening
the set with a blistering rendition of Take It Away, and borrowing
material from both their albums including Boxful Of Sharp Objects
and Buried Myself Alive from their self titled debut,
as well as I Caught Fire and I'm A Fake from the new
album 'In Love And Death'. And of course the crowd went bananas for
the latest single All That I've Got.
But to all the disappointed fans who missed out on tickets or couldn't afford the pilgrimage over to Sydney to see them - worry not. You actually didn't miss that much. Besides, they'll be here for Taste of Chaos in October anyway. Save your pennies and get your ticket fast...
