The Rogers Sisters
+ Love Of Diagrams, Limited Express (Has Gone?)
Grace Emily, Wed 18 May

Limited ExpressFirst off, I'm so glad I brought my earplugs. On tour from Japan, Limited Express (Has Gone?) probably played the loudest set I've heard for ages; but it was also one of the most mesmerising experiences I've ever had. Their simple three piece set-up belies the complexity of their sound, and for me (and most others I spoke to) they were the band of the night. Their smiles were infectious. Singing/vocalising in a cute Japanese accent, singer/bassist Yukari was fond of swaying her skinny body side to side while playing, feet spaced apart. The band loved to throw in their rock poses - I'm sure that the drummer (clad in Ed Harry Party Shirt) would have if he could have, as well. The sweat fogged glasses of guitarist Jinichiro Iida meant that he couldn't see towards the end, and maybe that's why he passed the guitar into the audience for Monika of Love Of Diagrams to play. Or maybe he just wanted to pose unobstructed. Their set consisted mainly of "exploding grooves" from their newest album, 'Makes You Dance'; at one point they screamed repetitively "I'm sorry, I'm sorry!". I wasn't. After Limited Express had packed up, Yukari put on a few warm layers of clothing and proceeded to nod off in a chair for the rest of the night. It was just so cute.

Love Of Diagrams invariably give a great show. As always, Monika Firkerle's drumming was a wonder to behold, but Antonia and Luke do a pretty good job of grabbing the attention up front as well. Their angular, high-tempo tunes are always enjoyable. They played a couple of new songs, along with older tunes like No Way Out.

Good as The Rogers Sisters were, in my eyes they were overshadowed by the previous performances. Their New York art meets Detroit rock meets B-52's sound was taut and well rehearsed. I guess they just lacked energy. Yes, there was plenty of testosterone and attitude from singer/bassist Miyuki Furtado and guitarist Jennifer Rogers, who was clad in a torn Jack Daniels shirt and displayed arms covered in tatts, but the energy I'm talking about comes from a band that enjoys what it's doing. The earlier bands seemed to love their time on stage, especially Limited Express. The Rogers Sisters just seemed like they going through the motions. Oh well. I still had a bit of a dance when they played I Dig A Hole.
