Anthrax
+ Mortal Sin
Heaven, Mon 16 May

AnthraxGiven that Anthrax's second show here in a little over a year was intended to commemorate the group's twentieth anniversary, it was perhaps fitting that the band given the enviable (if somewhat daunting) task of supporting them should be one with nearly as venerable a history behind them. That band was Australian thrash outfit Mortal Sin, who did an excellent job getting heads banging with such offerings as Into the Fire, Lebanon, I Am Immortal, and Mayhemic Destruction, and who were clearly enjoying themselves (especially in the case of the bass player) as much as the audience. Interestingly, it turned out that the group had recently undergone some significant lineup changes; of the five members on the stage that night, one had joined only last year, while another two (including the drummer, nicknamed 'Chewbacca' on account of his hairiness) had joined this year.

In contrast, Anthrax was playing with its original line-up, former front-man Joey Belladonna replacing John Bush (who sang at the group's 2004 show) on vocal duties. Having done his last show here with the band well over a decade ago, Belladonna was pumped to be back, and the audience was just as glad. As was the case at last year's show, the crowd was of a very healthy size, and people went just as crazy. The band threw themselves into things just as much as the audience; given that Belladonna had returned to the fold, the set not surprisingly consisted mainly of songs from the period when he'd been in the band: AIR, Madhouse, Medusa, Antisocial, Deathrider, Efilnikufesin (NFL) and In My World. Of course, once the show was over, an encore was inevitable; this got underway with Be All, End All (the audience's singing substituting for the violin in the recorded version's intro), and also included such songs as I Am The Law, and the group's classic hip-hop/metal crossover, I'm The Man.
