Weekend Sessions 2
Liberation/FMR
This is your typical Jack Johnson/Ben Harper surfing-the-Saturday-away mix CD - only without the Jack Johnson and Ben Harper. For once someone has finally decided they've had enough of J and B and thrown someone else into the mix.
Getting support from organizations like Clean Ocean means this album
is probably meant to have some underlying ideals, but aside from that
obvious prod at the conscience of listeners this is a pretty straightforward
and laid-back mix of sunny-day-at-the-beach background music. Salmonella
Dub open the CD with the reggae-flavoured Longtime leading
nicely into Donovan Frankenreiter (who has just finished his tour
with the aforementioned good ol' Jacko and G Love) who takes up with
once of his best, It Don't Matter. The Beautiful Girls, who
up until the beginning of this year had not been seen on many compilations,
take a bow with Weight Of The World from their 2004 album.
However, then the album takes a surprising turn towards the lesser-known
bands and artists like Pepper and the Custom Kings, while songs like
Fat Freddy's Drop's Hope and Rob Sawyer's Don't Wait On
Me redeem the CD from mainstream monotony.
This is a disc that appears to have been put together with minimum effort for maximum sales. Compiler Grant Lee Gillies seems to have just taken out the biggest names in the genre, plonked in four or five lesser-known bands and slapped a 2 at the end of the name. That said, if you want some good reggae cruising background music, this is the CD for you. Go for your life, surfers; you'll enjoy.
