The Kills
No Wow
Domino/Liberation
'No Wow' is dark. It's beautiful. It's decidedly lo-fi, although it sounds more deliberately so than did The Kill's debut album, 'Keep On Your Mean Side'. Vocalist VV and her partner Hotel have delivered a brilliantly focussed, relentless follow-up, that's far dirtier and grittier than other garage blues duos like The White Stripes and The Black Keys could ever muster.
The album is mainly defined by the driving, throbbing pulse of its
first half: No Wow, Love Is A Deserter, and first single
The Good Ones. It's not until I Hate The Way You Love
settles back into I Hate The Way You Love Part 2 that the album
gives the listener a break. Dead Road 7 takes a menacing detour
from the scunge of the rest of the album, while Rodeo Town
is the probably the most melodic ballad the duo have ever produced.
There's no pops, no bangs. No unnecessary screaming or dramatics highs
and lows. No obvious singles. 'No Wow' is far from boring though.
Perhaps it's the bubbling, constant threat that it will boil over
that makes it so chillingly good. Fans should note that the limited
edition also includes a great DVD documentary which includes interviews
and live performances of older classics like Cat Claw.
