Tegan & Sara
So Jealous
Vapor/Sanctuary/Shock
"Refreshing", "sincere" and "catchy" are three words I'd use to describe 'So Jealous', the new album for Canadian twins Tegan & Sara. It's a pleasant surprise, since I rated their debut 'If It Was You' so highly that I suspected it would be impossible to match. However, 'So Jealous' shows that Tegan and Sara have left behind some of their thrashy guitar sound and a little bit of their angst to develop a more mature, sophisticated folk-rock sound.
While 'So Jealous' lacks a bit of the grunt that I so strongly associated
with 'If It Was You', Tegan & Sara have certainly not lost their distinctive,
slightly rough vocals and quirky heartbroken lyrics. Each track tells
a bleak tale of love or loss somehow in the most steady and upbeat
fashion: "There's nothing to live for when I'm sleeping alone / And
I wash the windows outside in hopes that the glare will bring you
around" (You Won't Like Me). Almost the entire album deals
with matters of the heart but it's not depressing or begging for sympathy:
it's sung with a quiet confidence that keeps the album dancing along
nicely.
Sure, nothing about 'So Jealous' is genre defining or groundbreaking. The lyrics are simple and the music is straightforward, but that's the beauty of it. Unlike so many bands who try to be one thing or another, Tegan & Sara don't try to be anything other than what they are: a couple of girls with a bit of attitude writing solid pop songs. Give it a bit of airplay, whack a few stickers on the front and it could potentially be a chart topper.
