Counting Down The Days Natalie Imbruglia
Counting Down The Days
SonyBMG

It's album number three for Natalie Imbruglia, four years since 'White Lilies Island' and eight since she first found local and international success with 'Left Of The Middle'. She has returned refreshed and refreshing with the classy 'Counting Down The Days'. Working with no less than eight producers, Imbruglia has crafted an album of musical intelligence and emotional depth.

The fantastic opening track Starting Today sounds slightly like Torn all over again but then wonderful lead single Shiver kicks in. From there Imbruglia crafts pretty love songs with catchy and simple melodies, like I Won't Be Lost and Slow Down. She also ups the tempo on faster fare such as the Daniel Johns-produced title track. Gone is the angst from earlier days, her songwriting and fragile vocal delivery now expose a hopeful woman waiting for love to return. Changing lanes from the rawness of 'White Lillies Island', Imbruglia steers the album towards her pop sensibilities. Her formula of layering light jangly guitars with various subtle instruments isn't tampered with too much. When it is, such as the slow piano driven On The Run, or the spooky Honeycomb Child (co-written and produced by David Kosten of Faultine), it proves her creative dark side is still there, and will hopefully be revisited on future releases.

'Counting Down The Days' welcomes Imbruglia to the next level. Now an artist with an instantly recognizable and unique sound, she can join Alanis Morisette and Dido in the class of female pop artists with the smarts and talent to penetrate the mainstream, yet retain credibility.
