Katalyst Presents: Dusted
UMG
There are a number of compilations around featuring the originals of songs that have been sampled by contemporary artists, but while they invariably contain great snippets they often don't make great songs. 'Dusted' goes one better, exposing some gems that you've heard before but placing them alongside tracks that play well in full.
The Wiseguys sampled Marlena Shaw's California Soul for The
Sound You Hear, while Eminem fans will instantly recognise the
quirky bouncing beat from Labi Siffre's quirky I Got The...
as featured in My Name Is. Alongside these, any hip hop head
should instantly recognise Pete Rock's soulful horns on T.R.O.Y.,
while on the soul side Nina Simone pours her heart into the impossibly
expressive I Put A Spell On You as the stuttering trumpet mirrors
her almost tearful delivery. Digging a layer deeper, there are the
gloriously funky James Brown samples that populate Nas' Get Down,
while it's impossible to listen to Max Romeo's I Chase The Devil
without laughing at how watered-down The Police's limp attempts
at reggae really were. As with all such compilations, there are a
number of unheard tunes, such as The Red, a brooding beat overlaid
with keys that could have come from '2001...' while Jaylib haphazardly
adds a few rhymes or The Shunters' Space Blues, a wonderfully
languid jam punctuated by the eerie sounds of a theremin that transforms
into some of the greatest breaks you've never heard.
The tracks are mixed together perfectly and Katalyst has proved himself to be a man of exceptional taste with an excellent record collection to select from. You can either copy him and spend 20 years building yours up, or get the cream of the crop on this CD.
