Enz To Reform
Melbourne's Regent Theatre will host the ARIA Icons: Hall Of Fame event on Thurs 14 July. ARIA has run a Hall Of Fame as part of its ARIA awards since 1988 but this is the first stand-alone event. It is produced by awards producer Mark Pope, and run in conjunction with the City of Melbourne and the Victorian Major Events Corporation.

"Time constraints meant we were only able to induct one artist per year at the ARIAs, and as a result we were developing an alarming backlog of truly worthy recipients," said ARIA Awards chair Ed St John. Announced as the first three names to be inducted this year are Split Enz (who are tipped to be reforming to play, and release a double live album 'ExtravagENZa' that same month through Liberation from their Anniversary tour with the late Paul Hester on drums), Renee Geyer and Normie Rowe. The three other acts are thought to be The Easybeats, Hunters & Collectors and Smoky Dawson. The event will be broadcast on pay TV: VH1 will telecast it on Sun 17 July at 9.00pm. FOX8 will provide an encore screening on Sat 23 July at 8.30pm.

SA Reggae Collective
A group of names from SA's reggae sector have set up the Reggae Collective. According to Sonja Arnold of Djambang Productions, one of the prime movers of the collective, its aim is for bands, fans, promoters and media in that field to produce and cross-promote events, build up a buzz about the genre, empower the potency of its message and get reggae onto radio, festivals and cultural events, both in SA and nationally. The core members of this initiative are Moore Black & Connie Mmadicke (Moore Black & The Organic Roots); Papa Kwasi, ex members of The Radics; Rehanna Coulthard (Umeewarra Media who does a reggae radio show); John 'Ringo' Rigney (Kineman Karma), and Sonja Arnold (Djambang Productions). The Muses For Sale
SA's The Muses' five record stores are up for sale, after it was placed in administration with debts of $3.1 million last Friday. The family-owned stores will continue to run until a buyer is found, said director Mark Raphael. The five stores - in Rundle Mall, Elizabeth City, Noarlunga, Modbury and Kilkenny - have 37 employees, and was turning over between $8 million to $10 million a year. The chain was founded by Mark's father Peter in 1968, who started a store in Regent Arcade in Adelaide city selling books, cards and records. Administrator Chris Powell said the business would be advertised in the national press next week and hoped it'd be bought by an interstate company.

Some Management For Kate
Something for Kate have a new manager, after Carlene Albronda resigned after seven years to concentrate on family matters. He is Jonathan Williamson, who worked closely with Albronda and Something for Kate, during his time at the band's label Murmur / Sony Music. He is contacted at artcomm@tpg.com.au or 0419 228 596

AIR Strikes Deals
The Association of Independent Record Labels (AIR) has struck two global deals. One is to ensure members get their tracks on to iTunes services overseas, in case the upcoming Australian iTunes takes too long to make deals with Australian independents. The deal with Glasgow-based Rightsrouter, will allow members to make their recordings available online and mobile services with iTunes, Napster, Connect, eMusic, Karmadownload, 7digital, O2 and Melodeo.

AIR's second deal is with Austrade, to fund the first stand for Australian indie music at this year's Popkomm Music Conference and Festival, 14 - 16 September, in Berlin.

EMI Drops Profit
Despite EMI Music's success with Robbie Williams ('Greatest Hits' sold 6 million copies and went to #1 in 18 countries), Joss Stone and Norah Jones, its group sales fell by 8.4% to £3.54 billion for the year ending March 31, with profits down to £141 million from £163.3 million from last year. One of the main reasons was that major releases by Coldplay and the Gorillaz were delayed until the second part of the year: the two releases are expected to sell 15 million units. However EMI made sure the drop in profits was not worsened by shedding dud acts and reorganising labels.

EMI reported gains in sales in Australia/NZ, the UK, Latin America and Europe but a bad year in North America. The recording side amassed £1.54 billion in revenue. But the music publishing side, which has rights to 1 million songs, was a huge success, delivering £400.7m in revenue (up from £397.9m) and profits of £57.4m from £45.4m. Digital sales account for 2.5% of revenue, up to £49.7m from £15.1m.

Hives, Weezer, Coming?
Speculation has The Hives returning for dates in October after causing a buzz on Big Day Out this year. Weezer's Scott Shiner suggested they could be here after appearing at Japan's Sonic Festival in August. Their 'Make Believe' album entered the ARIA chart this week.

Fresh Cuts Surgery
Fresh FM has aced its Saturday Surgery show after several months due to "a lot of negativity" according to station management. This might or might not have had something to do with the show's countdown to the Pope Paul II's death, inviting pole dancers to demonstrate their stuff and undergoing a genital wax.

Ben's Garage Sessions
Adelaide film makers Kojo Group - aka Dale Roberts and Marty Pepper - literally made a garage video for Ben Folds. The occasional Adelaide resident rang them out of the blue at 9am, told them he hated the video the American company had made for his track for Landed and wanted them to do one. But it had to be done that night, as he was heading back to the 'States. The two shot it in Folds' garage, and added some experimental film footage courtesy Ben's wife Frally. No reason why Kojo couldn't rise to the occasion. In 2001, Folds gave them just one day's notice to make his Still Fighting It video.

In the meantime, Port Adelaide police are asking any of the 600 attendees who have footage of the awards to contact them, as they investigate the brawl, allegedly between the Hells Angels and the Rebels who were allegedly guests of two nominated nightclubs. Whether there is a 10th awards remains to be seen. DJ Josh, who hosted the event, says the SA dance community remains disappointed at the effect of the shooting on its profile. "The rave scene takes a lot of beating, and so does the club scene, because there's a lot of people in there that do things wrong," she told ABC Radio. Press reports suggest the brawl and the firing of guns was the latest in scuffles between groups over who controls the speed and nightclub security industries.

Aleks Bojanic, former promoter of The Eagle on the Hill, has set up Alecks Bojanic Promotions to tour acts. His first event is at the Capri Theatre on Fri 5 Aug with Glenn Shorrock, Brian Cadd, Rick Price.

Record Of The Week
Too bad if Seven Network Naomi Robson was hoping the surfacing of her "fuck"-filled spray at a hapless auto-cue, would go away soon. DJ duo Trash 4 Cash quickly did a remix, turning it into a dance track complete with an intro from the 'Today Tonight' story.
