Dance News.

Well, what a massive week it has been. The SA Dance Music Awards were pretty much the media focus this week, but for all the wrong reasons. Instead of celebrating the dance music scene's contribution to Adelaide's music scene in general, we were greeted with "Gang war at Rave Awards", the most irresponsible headline from the Advertiser since "Sex and Drugs as 1500 go wild at rave party!" If you didn't know, some people crashed the party at West Lakes and two shots were fired. It's a terrible state of affairs, and not something that is typically South Australian.

I feel especially sorry for those who didn't get their awards in front of their peers, like Noddy; although I've had issues with him in the past, in my opinion he's more deserving than most of the life time achievement award for his continued commitment to the dance music scene. Similarly 5158's Mark 7 missed out in being awarded the APRA Encouragement Award, selected by peers in the industry and granted $1000 to continue his good work. Anyway, let us not focus on the negative, but congratulate all the winners!

To sooth over Adelaide for missing the Fresh FM transmission party, Heaven and Chemistry present Kid Kenobi and MC Sureshock on Thurs 2 June. Fresh FM Watt holders receive free entry!

If you haven't had a chance to see Matrix, where have you been? He's blown away Adelaide every time he's played, and this is sure to be no exception! Matrix returns to Adelaide and lands in Earth on Sat 4 June.

Cash Money is another familiar face in Adelaide, ripping apart every venue he plays at with his wild blend of hip-hop and basically any other music he can get his grubby little hands on. Watch as Thurs 9 June as he tears Black Cat a new one!

Hip-hop label Stones Throw's head honcho Peanut Butter Wolf tours Adelaide in honour of their 100th release: the 'Stones Throw 101' DVD. Catch him playing at Sugar on Fri 10 June.

System 6 makes a welcome return for all the hard heads as Adelaide's award winning hard dance event hits Adelaide's newest club, Earth, this Queens birthday long weekend on Sat 11 June with an all-star international line up.including BK and Banga Matt alongside local DJs Odyssey, Mr S, H-Bomb, Devious Vs Quantum, Sniper, Ism, Torque Vs Hex, and Jesta Vs Pranksta.

Anthems also returns this June long weekend at St Pauls on Sun 12 June. DJs Brendon, ATB, Mr S, Andy J, Madness, Devious, George The Boss, Skot Holder, Reelax, Jayse and Noddy vs H-Bomb, Noddy vs Fiction, MPK, Patch, Mark 7 and Klem, with MCs Maestro D and Rudeboy, will be playing all genres for heads old and new.

As one half of rap outfit Gangstarr, Guru was to early 90s rap what The Furious 5 were to the early 80s - an artist who could bridge the great divide between his underground roots and the mainstream. His 'Jazzmatazz' series, a hybrid of hip-hop and jazz fusion, has earned its place in many a music collection. Renowned producer Solar, Guru's collaborator on his first solo album, will be along for the ride, and on the wheels of steel will be mix tape legend DJ Doo Wop bringing his tradition of NYC turntablism to Australia for the first time, with local support by Delta & Staen 1, Terra Firma, Mindfield, Shep and Dyems at the Shores Function Center, West Beach on Sun 12 June.

"There may be no other live DJ act better than Deep Dish" claims the Los Angeles Times and now is your chance to see if their claims are accurate. Playing in Adelaide on Sun 12 June at Heaven Nightclub, Deep Dish are one of the USA's finest dance music acts, and their live shows are not to be missed.

And for the d'n'b heads, I'm happy to announce your days of searching all over town for that elusive white label or that must-have junglist jacket are over as inbound, responsible for many a memorable d'n'b night, have decided to open up a shop designed for 'heads by 'heads. The Grand Opening is on Fri 3 June, and will feature some of Adelaide's best dnb DJs spinning whilst you do your shopping. Located at 4 Academy Cinema complex, Hindmarsh Square, it will be Adelaide's only outlet for Melbourne clothing label "Double D" plus Adelaide's own "Atlants" label, as well as stocking hard to find drum and bass on CD and vinyl.
