In the last column, mention was made of Contrive, a Melbourne outfit who are putting out a new album entitled 'The Meaning Unseen', which they mixed with the help of famed Swedish producer Fredrik Nordstrom at his Studio Fredman. Those whose interest in the band was piqued by this should be pleased to hear that Contrive will be the guests of honour at the next War Room, to be held on Fri 27 May at the Enigma Bar. Also playing on the night will be local acts 1000 Nightmares, Jessica In Pieces and In Daylight Tragedy, while, as always, there will also be CD giveaways going on, as well as metal DJs playing tracks between sets. On the subject of the War Room, keep yourself updated on who will be playing at this by going to the event's new website, www.thewarroom.vze.com; future acts are rumoured to include Fuck I'm Dead, Walk The Earth, and Demonother.

Local band Lycosa will be launching their new, self-titled CD - described as containing "four tracks of headbanging, hair-twirling metal" - at the Enigma Bar on Sat 28 May, with supports Imminent Psychosis, Deadlock and Chakkra. Doors open at 9 PM. For more info, check out www.lycosametal.tk.

Melbourne doom act The Eternal, who made numerous visits here last year, will be returning soon with a new line-up and new songs. Since their last Adelaide show the previous September, they have played in Europe and Hong Kong, been listed in Kerrang! Magazine's '50 Most Wanted', and had their debut recording, 'The Sombre Light Of Isolation', nominated second-best Australian release of 2004 by Triple J's Full Metal Racket. They will play an all-ages show at The Crown & Anchor with Chalice, Murder Hill, Of The Human Condition and new act Synovee (whose line-up includes Virgin Black's original bass player) on Sun 29 May.

It's not too long to go now before the Adelaide show of US extreme metal act Hate Eternal, a band founded by ex-Morbid Angel member Erik Rutan. Hate Eternal will play at Le Rox/Bridgeway Hotel on Sat 4 June with Tasmanian supports Psycroptic.

On the subject of shows next month, notorious local black metal outfit Darklord will be playing their next show at Jive on Fri 10 June, with supports Raven Black Night and Hatred Slave.

Byron Bay band Parkway Drive will be recording their new eleven-track album, 'Killing With a Smile' in America, with none other than Adam Dutkiewicz from Killswitch Engage. The CD will be recorded at Zing Studios in Westfield, Massachusetts, which have also been used by the likes of Killswitch Engage, Unearth, Every Time I Die, From Autumn to Ashes and Norma Jean. 'Killing With a Smile' should be in stores in September.
