The 16th Annual East Coast International Blues & Roots Music Festival
Warner
This compilation is for those wanting to relive a blissful Easter spent at Byron Bay soaking up a weekend of music that bombarded the senses. For everyone else it's an incredible two disc spread of bluesey/rootsy goodness. Bo Diddley. Solomon Burke. Parliament. Jeff Lang. Angelique Kidjo. The Violent Femmes... and a reggaed-up Jimmy Barnes. Breakthrough Aussies Joel Turner & The Modern Day Poets get another chance to shine as well as seasoned faves Missy Higgins, the John Butler Trio, the Waifs and The Beautiful Girls.
Try Not to Breathe kicks off Disc 2, with R.E.M. bringing that
familiar swaying, sea-breeze-ruffling-through hair-from car-windows
sound to the mix. Pick You Up appears from those Gomez charmers,
who can't resist the siren call of the Australian coast. G-Love's
Baby's Got Sauce is a revelation; the glowing references by
Johnson, Harper et al. are all deserved. Adelaide lovers of percussion
and rhythm will quiver upon hearing this bizarre, staccato/syncopated
word... er, rap thing. And they call it roots music! Tex Perkins,
Don Walker and Charlie Owen! Luka Bloom with Mary Watches Everything.
Sarah McLachlan appears with Angel in hand. Old Whitlams material!
The party continues with artists unfamiliar to the general punter,
which are unearthed and displayed here. We have Aganju, a tribal
reverie from Bebel Gilberto, the Genius of Los Mocosos and
Tired Of Being Alone by a fresh faced Aussie lad by the name of
Eran James. And the perfect way to finish off your own backyard festival
with a bang? Just let Cake deliver a cracker of a creepy song:
Take It All Away.
