DJ Sneak
House Keepin
Magnetic/Hussle/EMI
DJ Sneak is one of the more recognisable figures in Chicago house.
'House Keepin' is representative of Sneak's creativity and passion
for house music, particularly Chicago house. Originally hailing from
Puerto Rico, Sneak incorporates his Latin influences into his current
productions, including salsa, meringue and Latin orchestra with the
beautiful Siren Song, the jazzy Summer Song and
the up tempo Salsa Elektrika. Incredible and Morning
Come utilise off-beat sounds and heavy synthesisers to create
an eighties feel while Sneak's sense of humour comes through with
Que Pasa and the popular/annoying Fix My Sink, with
his cousin Bear Who? providing a quirky sense of novelty to the tracks
with his lyrics; cute, but these are jokes perhaps best left in the
recording studio. Funky Rhythm is cool and down tempo, reminiscent
of Sneak's contributions to the 'French Connections' series, while
Inside and The Gas delves into the deeper side of house
music.
The thread that connects this eclectic collection of tracks is Sneak's unique style, particularly his minimal productions and deft use of simple musical layers and filtered sounds. You'd be hard pressed to find a 12" mix anywhere in this album, with barely a track cracking the four minute mark. Sneak might keep it simple, but each track delivers.
