Transylvania 90210: Songs of Death, Dying And The Dead Wednesday 13
Transylvania 90210: Songs of Death, Dying And The Dead
Roadrunner/UMG

Call me tacky, but I just can't seem to get enough of the whole slasher/gore rock movement. One man who has pioneered the sound (if not so much the image) of this scene is Wednesday 13, former front man for Murderdolls (aka The Rejects) and Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13. Despite the fact that all of these projects sound more or less the same - and the new Wednesday 13 album is absolutely no exception - for some reason it's hard to dismiss his work as boring or tiresome. After his departure from Murderdolls, Wednesday locked himself away in his basement and wrote over 100 songs tackling his usual topics of interest: zombies, murder, monsters and general horror. The final 14 songs drawn from the heap constitute this album and are by no means the most complicated songs ever written, but man: are they so catchy it should be criminal.

When talking highlights, it's hard to ignore the progressive rock of Bad Things and the more mellow Transylvania 90210. Despite the fact that the vocals for the song are so cheesy that you almost shudder, and the music is basically three chords played over and over with a few notes from a creepy old organ played over the top, I can't seem to stop listening to the damn thing. The fact is all of the songs on this release pretty much comprise three of four basic chords with a standard verse-chorus structure, and even though I despise other acts for this reason, for some reason it completely works for Wednesday 13.
