Fagan
Shipping Secrets
Beetroot Recordings/Vitamin/MGM
For the uninitiated, Fagan are an experimental electronic duo from Queensland who are rapidly gathering a strong following around the country. What distinguishes Fagan from other parties to the boom in technology-based music in this country (presumably the result of cheapening home studio equipment) is that they really are bloody good. Essentially, Fagan are two blokes (Damien Sutton and Dominic Vincent) who have gotten together with an army of different vocalists to give us some quite brooding tunes to excite the senses. There's a lot of Bjork in this collection, but the sheer diversity presented by each of the different vocalists, and the flexibility of the two musicians give this album a quality and a sound all of its own.
Centred, featuring vocals by Lazenbo, is a great ambient piece
to begin with, followed by Dante, a song with an almost other-wordly
quality thanks to its deft use of samples. All That Grows, Grows
Wild is a subtle guitar song in the tradition of bands like Bluebottle
Kiss and even Brer Mouse, which is followed by the similar feel of
Favours, delivered this time by a great male vocal by Liam
Griffin. Rhiannon Hart is the impressive frontwoman for Tlollie Jar,
a sparse piano song following an almost soul tradition. This album
will give you everything you'd ever need, even diverting into uplifting
pop music with Aging Against The World, then back to breathy
beats with The Beautiful Mundane.
Not everything works on this album, and it is at times a little to complex to be an enjoyable listen from start to finish. But as a collection of ideas, Fagan will be hard to beat; I'm already looking forward to what might come next.
