Gorillaz have a new album out in May, and to have a chance to collaborate with them they've launched the first ever Online-Only Talent Competition - Get Yer Skills Out! They're looking to shine a light on brand new talent and hence they're asking people from all creative fields to send in submissions - anything from animations, musical samples, sickly off-cuts, brief sketches, film scenes, caught-on-cameras clips, out-takes, voice-overs, bits of unused footage, whatever; as long as it's humorous, dark, edgy, juvenile, insightful or thought provoking. Visit www.gorillaz.com for more info, and get your entries in!
Sean Quinn, one of Australia's finest DJ/producers, plays Tonic
on Fri 8 April. With three Ministry of Sound compilations behind
him, numerous releases on labels Vicious Vinyl and Pulse 8,
both solo and as half of the world-renowned production outfit
Our House with Kasey Taylor, Quinn's experience and accolades
are second to none! Supported by DJs Brendon and Dr Damage in
the main room, while DJs Wade C, K2, Ben Watt and Jazzy will
be setting the perfect laid back atmosphere in the front.
I walk past Soul 168 on Gouger St every day and think "that would be a great place for a gig." Evidently the folks at MTME Productions & Destruction have thought the same thing as they present Frequency on Sat 9 April with DJ Valex (Nitrox Records, UK). Styled towards the harder sounds of dance music with the heavy rolling sounds of techno and the rave feel of NRG, join Valex for his first show in Australia as he unleashes his Nitrox sound down-under. Locals include Cheeeky. B, Anarki, Badman, Aven, Kenny 'Da Killa' Koncept, Adrian V, Dirty Harry, R-E, Decoy, Hex, M.I.F, Divert and Rudeboy.
Chemistry 2005 are set to launch the brand new 'Volatile' CD
at Heaven on Thurs 14 April by holding a three-way DJ battle
between Narc, Matt Rains and Matt Knoles. They'll ride the wheels
of steel alongside Chemistry residents Cheeky.B, Brendon, Steve
Hart, Kidd Phase, Submission, Mr.S, Odyssey, Noddy and MC Jules.
Sunshine Jones from San Francisco's Dubtribe Soundsystem and Imperial Dub Records will be on the decks at Sugar on Sat 16 April. Playing a four hour DJ set, Sunshine is set to deliver a hybrid sound from the roots of house to a rededication to sensual, and emotional dance music with support from Tim Carter, Moto and Driller.
System 6 is proud to present Freeformation
II on 16 April with two of the UK rave scene's biggest names:
AMS and Robbie Long (Nu Energy Collective) alongside Adelaide's
favourite locals at the all new Earth nightclub (in the former
Downtown/Weimar Room) on Hindley St.
And as a new venue opens here, a legendary one shuts on the other side of the world: Tresor, one of the finest names in electronic music for the last decade and a half, releasing the likes of Juan Atkins, Joey Beltram, Pacou and Organ Grinda on their label, will celebrate the last party in its Leipzigerstrasse location on Sat 16 April. The management of the club released a statement thanking "all the artists, co-workers or guests that have, for over 14 years, made this utopia in the heart of Berlin possible." But fear not, European club aficionados, as they seek a new venue to party in, hopefully for the next decade and a half.
And speaking of closures, NERD may have called
it a day, according to some reports. Apparently Pharrell Williams
said in an interview on BBC1 that he wasn't happy with his current
record label Virgin. "I've been very quiet about it for the
last two years. I'm not here to slander or throw dirt, I'm just
not happy so therefore NERD is expired," he spat. However, mere
days later, a representative for Williams told The New York
Daily News that they're "definitely not broken up; they're performing
in Japan in a couple of weeks... [Williams] said those things
out of frustration." However, the Daily News reports that Pharrell's
'frustration' is still enough for them to seek a way out of
their deal with Virgin...
